HRDC – The Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled Children is a program of a non-governmental organization, the Friends of the Disabled. It is the only tertiary level hospital in the country located in Banepa which provides the best reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation for children below 16 years of age. Its services are aimed at under privileged physically challenged children in Nepal. HRDC represents the culmination of the past efforts to establish and improve upon the services rendered to disabled children, begun by Terre des hommes (Tdh) in Jorpati in 1985. In 1992, the Friends of the Disabled (FOD) were established and this organization oversees the activities of HRDC. The Center's modern facilities occupy 9 acres (74 ropanies) of land on top of a ridge overlooking the terraced fields and wooded hills surrounding Banepa, located 25 km. east of Kathmandu. Currently it has more than 10 visiting doctors, surgeons and consultants. The hospital has the capacity of 66 beds and separate residential quarters for the key staffs. HRDC provides comprehensive quality medical care and rehabilitation to children with participation restriction due to physical disabilities, especially for the poor. The main objective of HRDC is to provide curative, preventive and rehabilitation services to children affected with musculoskeletal disorders. It conducts medical intervention for the children up to the age of 16 and rehabilitation up to age 18.
