Introduction:

Regimental Duty Staff (RDS) is a vital department of British Gurkhas Pokhara (BGP), responsible for the physical security of the British Gurkhas Nepal (BGN) camp in Pokhara. Working in small teams in a shift system, RDS provides physical security to serving personnel, families, VIP visitors, and property of BGP. During periods of Gurkha selection, the RDS provide crowd-control, and continue to guard the camp in teams to the highest standards. Following MoD and BGN Security best practices and protocols, they perform ethical security duty of the highest standards.

Responsible to the Guard Commander for providing security to British Gurkhas Pokhara (BGP) in order to protect BGP personnel, dependants and property.

This position is advertised at 40 hours per week in shift system.

Job description/Responsibilities:

  • Regularly patrol the camp area as directed by the Guard Commander. Control your dog and use it effectively to deter, locate, detain and guard intruders.
  • Administration. Provide a high standard of administration for the dogs including Feeding, kennel hygiene, dog medical equipment maintenance, dog baiting equipment.
  • Dog Exercise. Provide minimum of 30 minutes of routine exercise per dog twice a day.
  • Dog Training/ Own theory training. Conduct everyday training directed by the RDS Sgt to ensure that the dog remains alert and operationally effective.
  • Veterinary Treatment. Monitor the dogs’ health and request veterinary assistance if required.
  • Shifts. Work in shifts and complete a full HOTO with the oncoming Dog Handler.
  • Sentry. Work as sentry during Regional and Central Selection if required.
  • First Aid. Apply basic First Aid in an emergency.
  • Work outside BGP. Be prepared to work in other British Camps within Nepal if necessary.
  • Control and Supervision - Handlers must maintain full control of the dog at all times, whether through verbal commands, leash, or other tools. This is critical in public spaces or around others to prevent unintended attacks. The dog must be restrained (e.g., leashed, muzzled, or kennelled) when not actively working, especially in areas with people or other animals.
  • Safe Handling and Environment- Handlers are responsible for providing a safe environment for the dog, including secure. containment (e.g., fenced yard or crate) to prevent escapes that could lead to attacks. They must ensure the dog’s physical and mental health.
  • Record Keeping and Documentation- Maintaining records of the dog’s training, certifications, and incident history may be required. Documentation may be necessary to prove the dog’s training and behaviour in case of legal disputes.
  • Public Safety and Risk Management- Handlers are responsible for preventing the dog from harming innocent people or animals. This includes ensuring the dog only engages in protective behaviour when commanded or when a clear threat exists.
  • Must support BGP Contingencies/Emergencies planning.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as Dog Handler.
  • Training in Dog Handling is preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Academic SLC/SEE
  • Technical Security, Dog Handler
  • English Good Written and Spoken
  • Nepali Good Written and Spoken
