Introduction:

Defence Infrastructure Organization (Nepal) (DIO(N) British Gurkhas Nepal, Kathmandu provide technical/ engineering support to British Gurkhas Nepal, Pokhara BGN(P) & British Gurkhas Nepal, Dharan BGN(D). The department's primary output is the delivery of new infrastructure and the management and maintenance of existing infrastructure, including electrical distribution systems, mechanical plant, water treatment facilities, boilers, heating plant and other critical life support infrastructure in support of HQ BGN in Nepal. The post holder is responsible for supporting DIO(Nepal) in the day to day running of the estate with regards to carpentry works.

This position is advertised at 40 hours per week.

Job description/ Responsibilities:

  • Take measurements and calculate the size and amount of material needed.
  • Plan and execute carpentry and joinery works from sketches, working drawings and technical specifications.
  • Prepare timber and other materials for use (cut, shape and smooth), manufactures joints, use adhesive, produce windows, door frames, door linings and internal joinery fitments.
  • Lay out floorings, roofings or drywells ensuring they are levelled and compatible.
  • Carve and assemble furniture, cabinets, shelves and other items with fine detail to utmost sturdiness and quality, apply finishing protective coats and install them to designated locations.
  • Inspect places (carpentry, fixed furniture and guttering etc) and conduct repairs or maintenance as required via help desk process.
  • Build scaffolding and other construction structures.
  • Safely and efficiently operate wood working hand and power tools. Keep tools and equipment clean, sharp, and in good working order.
  • Ensure all work adheres to relevant BS standards, safety regulations, and project specifications.
  • Work effectively, independently and collaboratively as part of a working team ensuring constructive, communication on progress and any issues encountered to line management.
  • Strictly follow all safety protocols, wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Work in workshops, confined spaces, high structures, accommodation quarters, commercial buildings and hot and humid kitchens.
  • Any other tasks commensurate with grade and competence, as directed by line management.

You must have:

Work Experience:

  • Proven experience as a Carpenter for minimum of 3 years or have served a recognised apprenticeship as a Carpenter for minimum of 5 years.
  • Proficiency in using all relevant hand and power tools for Carpentry trade.

Qualification:

  • Good written/ spoken English and Nepali language skills.
  • Be able to provide formal vocational certification of training in Carpentry preferably from a recognized reputed training institutions affiliated to CTEVT or be able to provide apprenticeship certificate on Carpentry work from reputed organizations.
  • Candidate must be a literate person with a SLC/SEE level education.

You will be assessed on your Carpenter skills through an assessment including written, practical and interview test.
