Duty Station: Heifer Project Nepal (HPN), Hattiban, Lalitpur (with frequent field visits) 

Contract Type: Short-term consultancy

Duration: 6 months (with possibility of extension)

Job Description

HPN has been advancing its locally led development approach, working closely with provincial and local governments, cooperatives, partner organizations, and community institutions. To strengthen communication and knowledge sharing, HPN produces a wide range of stories, knowledge products, and technical resources. While many of these are developed in English, their impact can be significantly enhanced if they are translated, contextualized, and made accessible in both English and Nepali. This requires a consultant who is fully competent in reading and writing both languages, able to translate materials from English to Nepali and Nepali to English, and skilled at adapting content so it resonates with diverse audiences while maintaining technical accuracy and consistency with Heifer’s messaging.

HPN seeks to engage a dedicated Communications Consultant to support the Communications Department in producing high-quality bilingual content and strengthening engagement with local stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect compelling human-interest stories, success stories, and field narratives from project areas.
  • Translate communications materials, knowledge products, technical documents, and other resources from English to Nepali and Nepali to English.
  • Contextualize content to reflect local realities while maintaining technical accuracy and consistency with Heifer’s messaging.
  • Develop and publish human stories and communications content on HPN’s social media platforms in a timely manner.
  • Support the production of high-quality communication materials tailored for local governments, implementing partners, community institutions, media, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure consistency in tone, messaging, and branding across all outputs.
  • Perform other communications-related responsibilities as and when needed.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Development Studies, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Proven experience in translation both ways (English ↔ Nepali) with strong contextual adaptation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in story collection, writing, and editing for development organizations.
  • Competence in reading and writing both English and Nepali at a professional level.
  • Familiarity with social media content creation and digital engagement strategies.
  • Strong understanding of Nepal’s socio-cultural context and ability to produce content that resonates with local audiences.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in both English and Nepali.
  • Prior experience working with NGOs/INGOs or development projects preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with design tools (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Canva) for preparing visually engaging communication materials.
  • Basic photography and videography skills to support story collection and documentation.
  • Experience in digital storytelling and multimedia content production.
  • Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and deliver high-quality outputs under time constraints.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

Duration and Payment

  • The consultancy will be for 6 months, with possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs.
  • Payment will be made on a monthly basis upon submission of agreed deliverables.
