“Develop Crop Specific Training Module in Farmer Field School (FFS) Approach (Goal -II) Project.”

ADRA Nepal is implementing a number of livelihood projects which encompasses capacity building of farmers in improved production practices and climate adaptation in farming.  The projects currently being implemented are:

  • FOSTER project in Dhading funded by Canadian Food grains Bank.
  • GOAL II project in Rolpa and Pyuthan funded by DFAT Australia.
  • LIRIC project in Dhanusha and Mahottari funded by EU and co-funded by Austrian Development Agency

In all of above projects, ADRA works with beneficiaries organized in farmer groups comprising about 15-25 members. Group members are trained on improved production practices and measures to adapt to the changing climate.  A key learning over the course of project implementation was that isolated training events in the crop cycle are less effective to impart skills and knowledge.  Therefore, training approach has been revised to incorporate the principles of Farmers Field School Approach where groups members are facilitated to come together multiple times during a crop cycle, reflect the experience and co-learn while comparing improved/adaptation practices with their traditional farming practices. Lead farmers are trained to facilitate the session with technical support from project staffs, especially during the early stage of their capacity building. Over the long run, they are expected to be capable enough to facilitate these learning sessions independently. ADRA has already developed a process guide to conduct training in FFS approach and also started training lead farmers/facilitators. However, a key issue has been a lack of technical module on specific crops and making it difficult for farmers facilitators to facilitate the technical sessions.   ADRA wishes to develop a simple and handy module in 8 crops which will be used as a reference material by farmer facilitators.
