Job Description: Water Resources Engineer (1)

Duty Station: Kathmandu, Nepal

Start Date: 20 April 2026 (tentative)

Duration: Initial contract of two (2) years, including a three (3) month probation period, with possibility of extension based on performance and project requirements.

Position Summary

The Water Resources Engineer will lead the design, implementation, monitoring, and research of water-related infrastructure and disaster risk management projects. The position requires strong expertise in hydrology, geotechnical analysis, and advanced water resources modeling, including the application of modern analytical tools such as machine learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of water-related projects, including water supply, irrigation systems, river training, and flood control works.
  • Conduct hydrological and hydraulic analysis for infrastructure planning and risk assessment.
  • Perform geotechnical investigations and analysis related to water infrastructure and slope/river stability.
  • Contribute to and lead research activities in water resources, including flood risk, watershed management, and climate resilience.
  • Apply advanced analytical methods, including machine learning techniques, for hydrological modeling, forecasting, and data analysis.
  • Prepare detailed technical designs, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Develop high-quality technical reports, research publications, and policy briefs.
  • Support planning and execution of water-related disaster risk reduction projects (floods, landslides, erosion control).
  • Coordinate with government agencies, academic institutions, and development partners.
  • Supervise field activities and ensure compliance with engineering standards, environmental safeguards, and safety protocols.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and project staff.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Geo-hydrology, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience in:
    • Design, implementation, and monitoring of water-related projects
    • Hydrological and hydraulic analysis
    • Geotechnical investigations and analysis
    • Flood risk assessment and river engineering
    • Water resources research and technical reporting
  • Demonstrated experience in applying machine learning or advanced data analysis techniques in hydrology or water resources is highly desirable.
  • Strong proficiency in engineering and analytical software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS, hydrological models such as HEC-RAS, SWAT, or similar tools).
  • Strong understanding of Nepal’s water resources systems, policies, and disaster risks.

Position Summary

The Engineer will be responsible for planning, designing, and implementing water-related infrastructure and research projects. The role includes technical design, field supervision, research activities, and involvement in water-related disaster risk reduction and management initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop water supply, irrigation, and river training projects.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of water supply, irrigation, river training, and flood control projects.
  • Support development and operation of MIS-based WASH planning systems.
  • Assist in preparation and updating of Municipal WASH Plans (MWASH).
  • Contribute to Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Disaster Preparedness Plans, especially for water-related hazards.Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Conduct site assessments, surveys, and feasibility studies.
  • Supervise construction activities and ensure compliance with technical standards and safety regulations.
  • Lead and contribute to water resources-related research activities and technical studies.
  • Prepare high-quality technical and research reports.
  • Support planning and implementation of water-related disaster risk reduction projects (e.g., flood control, landslide mitigation, riverbank protection).
  • Coordinate with government agencies, stakeholders, and development partners.
  • Monitor project progress and provide regular updates to management.
  • Ensure environmental and social safeguard compliance in project implementation.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience in:
    • Water supply systems
    • Irrigation design
    • River training and flood control works
    • Water resources research and report preparation
    • Water-related disaster management projects
  • Proficiency in engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, GIS tools preferred).
  • Good understanding of Nepal’s water sector policies and practices.
  • Strong analytical, reporting, and communication skills.

Job Requirements: Admin/Finance Assistant

Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Management, Business Administration, Rural Development (RD), Finance, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Additional training in accounting, finance, or administrative management will be an advantage.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of relevant work experience in administrative and/or finance support roles.
  • Experience working with NGOs/INGOs, development projects, or consulting firms is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling office administration, logistics coordination, and basic financial management tasks.
  • Experience in supporting project-based financial and administrative operations is an asset.

Core Responsibilities and Functional Competencies

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support, including office management, filing systems, and documentation control.
  • Assist in financial management tasks such as preparation of vouchers, maintaining financial records, and supporting bookkeeping activities.
  • Support budgeting processes, expense tracking, and financial reporting under the guidance of senior finance staff.
  • Maintain proper documentation of financial transactions in compliance with organizational and donor requirements.
  • Assist in procurement processes, including quotation collection, comparative analysis, and vendor coordination.
  • Manage logistics arrangements such as travel bookings, meetings, workshops, and event coordination.
  • Maintain inventory records and support asset management.
  • Support audit processes by organizing and providing necessary documentation.

Technical Skills
