#HerClimateStory Film-Making Initiative
1. Background Information of YUWA
YUWA is a youth-led, youth-run organization officially established in 2009, working to promote youth participation through empowerment and advocacy. Over the past decade, YUWA has implemented diverse initiatives across its three primary thematic areas: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Active Citizenship, and Research.
2. Background of the project
YUWA, in collaboration with Plan International Nepal, is initiating the #UniteForResilience Campaign, integrating a strong climate justice and gender lens that emphasizes the disproportionate impacts of climate change on girls and young women in Nepal. As a part of this #HerClimateStory initiative, YUWA aims to produce four short films (5-7mins), that showcase climate-induced gender inequalities by amplifying the voices and lived experiences of young girls affected by environmental and social crises.
This initiative is intentionally designed as a mentorship-driven, collaborative storytelling platform which will engage YUWA and Plan International Nepal nominated mentees, primarily young women and girls, who will work closely with the selected Film-making Team (Mentors). Through guided mentorship, the mentors and mentees will jointly conceptualize, develop, and produce films, including scriptwriting, screenplay development, and dialogue creation using a climate justice and gender equality lens. The mentors and mentees will collaboratively travel to selected climate-affected communities to document interviews, environmental contexts, and community narratives involving girls, young women, men, teachers, fathers, girl activists, and other community members. The film making initiative shall include any one or more themes of gender and climate resilience, focusing on how climate change impacts young women and how they are leading innovative solutions as mentioned below:
- Child Marriage: Climate-induced poverty and displacement as drivers of early marriage.
- Gender Based Violence: Increased violence and exploitation during and after climate-related disasters.
- Access to education and School Dropout: Climate shocks force girls to drop out due to economic stress or increased domestic workload (e.g., need to travel longer distance for water collection).
- Climate Induced Migration/Displacement: Climate crises serve as a catalyst to relocate as environmental stress deepens their workloads, debt burdens, and mobility constraints, making them especially vulnerable to displacement.
- Economic Empowerment and Leadership: Showcasing young women actively leading and participating in local climate change adaptation/resilience initiatives
- Climate induced impact on Women’s Reproductive Health: The lack of access to SRHR services and increased health risks during and after climate events.
