SCOPE OF WORK

USAID Karnali Water Activity

Project Background:

The USAID Karnali Water Activity will create healthy, resilient, and water secure  communities  at  the  watershed  level  through  strengthened  water  and  sanitation governance that improves water resource management (including water for more resilient and biodiverse ecosystems), enhances sustainable access to drinking water, improves agriculture water management, and reduces the fecal pathogen burden in the environment from poorly managed non-sewered sanitation through fecal sludge management. The program team will methodically integrate Water Resource Management (WRM), watershed biodiversity conservation, and water supply and sanitation (WSS) service delivery by mapping and strengthening the roles, connections, and capacities of key actors and stakeholders systemwide.

Position Overview:

The overall objective of this internship is to encourage youth and women from marginalized groups in Nepal because of caste (e.g., Dalits), disability, ethnicity (e.g., indigenous), geographic origin (e.g., Madhesi, remote rural areas), religion (e.g., Muslims) to participate in practical learning opportunities in the WASH, watershed management, and biodiversity conservation sectors. It allows them to gain hands-on experience, apply their knowledge, and develop the necessary skills for future careers in WASH. It is two-way process where Interns also bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and energy to the projects, contributing to effective implementation. The intern (s) will be based in 4 watershed offices with occasional travel to field sites in the Karnali River Basin.

Key Responsibilities:

• Intern (s) will work in close coordination with Watershed Manager(s) and teams to assist in the preparation and implementation of the project activities. They will support the watershed team to coordinate and collaborate with local partners, local government, and other stakeholders.
• Support activities related to integrated water resource management (WRM), watershed biodiversity conservation, and inclusive water and sanitation service delivery.
• Support and collaborate with Watershed teams to integrate GESI considerations into the activities and assist in community mobilizing and capacity building activities. 
• Assist the watershed team in facilitating community in conservation efforts and compile the feedback on the reports and surveys. 
• Assist team in tracking the progress versus achievements, conduct data entry in DAICollect in support of MEL team. 
• Assist in compilation and the preparation of biweekly and monthly project reports, case studies, or success stories from the field to inform future interventions.
• Assist in any other assigned tasks contributing to USAID Karnali Water Activity.

Qualifications and requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology, Community/Social Work, Development Studies, Gender Studies, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, or any other relevant subjects.  
• No work experience required / Fresh graduates are eligible and encouraged. 
• Basic computer skills.  
• Willingness to learning program related tasks. 
• Good written and oral communication skills in Nepali and basic communication skills in English 
• Commitment to values: integrity, responsibility, excellence, and global citizenship.
• Permanent residents of USAID Karnali Water Activity’s working areas. Priority will be provided to the applicants from the same geographical region in the intern’s placement.

Level of Effort/Timeline: 

The level of effort is 3 months (40 hours of work per week). The internship is offered for a full 3 months with the possibility of extensions upon the availability of funds. The intern(s) will be based in the Watershed office(s) with frequent travel to the field sites of the respective watershed working areas.

Supervision 

The intern (s) will report to the Watershed Manager(s) of respective Watershed offices.
