Background/ Context

Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the British Red Cross, is implementing the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project in three districts - Sindhuli, Ramechhap, and Okhaldhunga in Nepal. The project is addressing the water, sanitation and hygiene needs of the vulnerable people living in the project areas by bringing safe drinking water to their reach.

Purpose

IFRC/NRCS is seeking professional services for video and photo documentation of the project activities and results through video stories and photographs. 

The expected number of video stories is a maximum of 12. The approximate length of every story will be one minute.  

The overall documentation (video and photos) will highlight the following:

  • The transition of changes in the community/individual through creative storytelling will reflect the project activities and their impacts.
  • Showcase the joint initiatives between IFRC/NRCS, local government, and communities.

Scope of work

The selected consultant will travel to the project sites i.e., Sindhuli (Sunkoshi Rural Municipality - 6), Ramechhap (Manthali Municipality - 1 and Ramechhap Municipality - 5) and Okhaldhunga (Siddicharan Municipality - 1, Molung Rural Municipality - 3, 4 & 5) in different phases from August- November 2023 to document the project/stories as mentioned below. 

The activities will be pre-planned, and the IFRC/NRCS will make travel and accommodation arrangements for the consultant as required.

Video: The consultant will be responsible for the overall production of the video under the supervision of the focal person from the IFRC. The consultant will coordinate with the team and volunteers in the project sites to document the project’s key results, practices, and challenges.  

The produced video must be of high quality and well-executed. IFRC/NRCS will support the consultant in documenting the stories/project activities.

Photos: The consultant will photograph project activities (construction, health, community participation, etc.) based on IFRC and NRCS visibility and branding guidelines. The IFRC focal will orient the photographer on required services, photo guidelines, and standards. 

Requirements: Portraits and in-action photos of community people and Red Cross volunteers. The images must be clear, in focus, and a minimum of 3 MB in file size, taken in natural light and with proper exposure. No timestamps. The consultant must provide high-resolution and edited photos within the deadline. 

The consultant is expected to show appropriate sensitivity towards the community, individuals, and children they photograph/film and take consent beforehand. 

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • At least five years of experience in videography and photography.
  • Experienced in producing development-related documentaries for governmental and non-governmental organizations, bilateral and humanitarian organizations targeted at local and international audiences.
  • Good knowledge of technical requirements and settings for producing high-quality video and taking photographs in various settings. 
  • Experienced in human storytelling and execution.
  • Ability to work with branding guidelines.
  • Ownership of professional cameras and all required equipment, including lenses, tripods, camera light, microphone, audio recorder, light reflector, video editing software, etc.
  • Must be willing to travel to the project sites and work in close coordination with team members.

Deliverables

The consultant must ensure the delivery of complete videos and photographs. This includes:

  • Developing storyboard for the video and overall production, including filming A-rolls and B-rolls, editing, audio-mixing, scriptwriting, and subtitles.
  • Close coordination with the IFRC focal and NRCS team members throughout the assignment. 
  • Take photos and film videos based on the IFRC’s branding guidelines.
  • Submit a final high-quality video and edited high-resolution photos. The consultant must incorporate the comments and revise the videos based on the feedback from the IFRC/NRCS.

Duration of the Assignment

The assignment is estimated to take approximately 35 working days within four months from the contract’s signing date.

Timeline

The assignment includes traveling to the three project districts. The first travel is expected to take place in the first half of August 2023, and the following will be a few weeks/months, depending on the community project activities.

The travel will be phase-wise and planned in coordination with the IFRC/NRCS.

Rights and Reservations

The IFRC reserves the right to reject or request to retake the videos/ photos if it doesn’t meet the standards. In such cases, the consultant must agree to retake photos/videos without any additional payments from IFRC.

Copyright: All materials arising out of the consultancy shall remain the property of IFRC/ NRCS.

Reporting

The consultant will report to the IFRC Focal from Communication Team, who will support the assignment. The consultant will discuss and plan all required activities in consultation with the focal.
