Position Title: Clinical Psychologist
Employment: Part- Time
Duty Station: Kathmandu, Nepal
Reports to: Program Manager
Contract Duration: August 2026 – December 2026 (with possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability)
1. Background
KOSHISH is a national-level Organization of Persons with Disabilities (OPD) established in 2008 to promote mental health and psychosocial wellbeing in Nepal. Working in partnership with government, development partners, and communities, KOSHISH strengthens mental health systems, advances the rights of persons with psychosocial disabilities, and improves access to quality Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services. To strengthen the technical quality and clinical governance of its MHPSS programmes, KOSHISH is seeking a qualified Part-time Clinical Psychologist to provide clinical supervision, technical guidance, capacity building, and quality assurance support to psychologists, counselors, and programme teams.
2. Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Part-time Clinical Psychologist provides technical leadership to strengthen the quality and effectiveness of MHPSS services across KOSHISH programmes. The position supports clinical supervision, mentoring, capacity building, quality assurance, and technical guidance to ensure evidence-based, ethical, and client-centred mental health service delivery.
3. Roles and Responsibilities
The incumbent shall perform, but not be limited to, the following duties and responsibilities.
A. Technical Guidance and Clinical Governance
- Provide technical leadership to strengthen the planning, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of MHPSS services across KOSHISH programmes, ensuring that interventions are evidence-based, client-centred, rights-based, disability-inclusive, and culturally appropriate.
- Provide technical guidance on psychological assessment, diagnosis, case formulation, treatment planning, counseling interventions, psychosocial support, crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, safeguarding, referral pathways, and management of complex mental health conditions.
- Review complex clinical cases and provide technical recommendations to psychologists and counselors to strengthen clinical reasoning, decision-making, intervention planning, and quality of care.
- Support programme teams in integrating mental health and psychosocial support into community-based services, health systems, and disability inclusion initiatives in line with national priorities and organizational strategies.
- Ensure that clinical practices and service delivery approaches comply with the Mental Health Strategy and Action Plan of Nepal, WHO QualityRights, WHO mhGAP Intervention Guide, IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support, and other relevant national and international standards.
- Participate in technical review meetings, multidisciplinary case conferences, programme planning sessions, and organizational learning events to provide technical advice and support evidence-informed decision-making.
- Identify emerging technical issues, service gaps, and capacity needs, and recommend practical strategies to strengthen programme quality and effectiveness.
B. Clinical Supervision, Capacity Development and Quality Assurance
- Conduct periodic competency and learning needs assessments of psychologists, counselors, and relevant programme staff to identify technical gaps and develop practical capacity development plans.
- Provide regular individual and group clinical supervision, mentoring, coaching, and supportive feedback to strengthen professional competencies, ethical practice, clinical reasoning, documentation, and case management.
- Observe counseling sessions and provide structured feedback to improve counseling skills, communication techniques, therapeutic relationships, and adherence to professional standards.
- Design, organize, and facilitate refresher trainings, technical workshops, case conferences, peer learning sessions, and mentoring activities on topics such as evidence-based psychological interventions, trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, child and adolescent mental health, psychosocial support, professional ethics, safeguarding, documentation, and self-care.
- Promote continuous professional development by encouraging reflective practice, peer learning, knowledge sharing, and staff wellbeing to reduce burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress among frontline mental health professionals.
- Review and strengthen psychological assessment tools, counseling protocols, supervision guidelines, referral mechanisms, documentation systems, and quality assurance frameworks to ensure they are technically sound, gender-responsive, disability-inclusive, culturally appropriate, and aligned with current evidence and best practices.
- Conduct supportive supervision and technical quality assurance visits to programme sites to monitor service quality, identify challenges, and provide practical recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Promote adherence to professional ethics, confidentiality, informed consent, safeguarding principles, and the "Do No Harm" approach in all psychological and psychosocial interventions.
- Support the implementation of quality improvement initiatives and monitor progress against agreed technical standards, providing regular feedback to programme teams and management.
C. Coordination, Representation, Documentation and Organizational Learning
- Work collaboratively with programme teams, government agencies, health facilities, academic institutions, professional associations, and development partners to strengthen coordination, referral systems, and technical collaboration for quality MHPSS service delivery.
- Represent KOSHISH in technical meetings, workshops, coordination forums, professional networks, and stakeholder consultations as delegated by the Program Manager.
- Provide technical inputs during project design, proposal development, implementation planning, monitoring, evaluation, and donor reporting to strengthen programme quality and technical credibility.
- Prepare and submit monthly technical reports, supervision records, field monitoring reports, and other required documentation in a timely manner while maintaining confidentiality and professional standards.
- Document lessons learned, best practices, case studies, technical innovations, and success stories to contribute to organizational learning, knowledge management, and evidence-based programming.
- Support the development, review, and dissemination of technical guidelines, manuals, training materials, publications, research products, and other knowledge resources related to mental health and psychosocial support.
- Contribute to technical reviews, programme evaluations, operational research, and learning initiatives to strengthen organizational capacity and improve programme effectiveness.
- Perform any other technical responsibilities assigned by the Program Manager that are consistent with the objectives of the position and KOSHISH's strategic priorities.
4. Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications, professional experience, and competencies:
Education
- Master's degree or higher in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a closely related discipline from a recognized university.
- Valid registration with the Nepal Health Professional Council (if applicable - optional)
Professional Experience
- Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in providing psychological assessment, psychotherapy, counseling, clinical supervision, and technical leadership in MHPSS programmes.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and facilitating capacity-building programmes, clinical supervision, mentoring, and professional development for psychologists, counselors, or mental health professionals.
- Experience working with NGOs, INGOs, government institutions, hospitals, or community-based mental health programmes is highly desirable.
- Proven experience in strengthening clinical governance, developing technical guidelines, reviewing psychological tools and protocols, and supporting quality assurance systems.
- Experience in suicide prevention, crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, disability inclusion, community mental health, and safeguarding is highly desirable.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and coordinating with government agencies, development partners, academic institutions, and professional bodies will be considered an asset.
5. Reporting Relationships
The Part-time Clinical Psychologist will report directly to the Program Manager and work in close collaboration with the Technical Team, Project Coordinators, Psychologists, Counselors, and other programme personnel.
The position will provide technical guidance and professional mentoring to psychologists, counselors, and relevant programme staff but will not have direct administrative or line management responsibility unless otherwise assigned by management.
6. Working Arrangement
This is a part-time staff position requiring approximately 6–8 working days per month, with flexibility based on programme priorities and organizational needs.
The position will be based at the KOSHISH central office in Kathmandu with a hybrid working arrangement that includes office-based work, virtual technical support, and field visits to project locations as required. Approximately 30% travel may be required to support programme implementation, clinical supervision, monitoring, training, and coordination activities.
The Clinical Psychologist is expected to maintain regular communication with programme teams, participate in scheduled meetings, and remain available during agreed working days to provide timely technical support.
7. Performance Expectations
Performance will be assessed periodically based on the achievement of agreed work plans and the quality of technical support provided. Key performance expectations include:
- Strengthened technical quality, consistency, and effectiveness of MHPSS services across KOSHISH programs. Regular clinical supervision, mentoring, and technical support provided to psychologists, counselors, and programme staff in accordance with agreed schedules.
- Improved technical competencies of programme staff through capacity-building initiatives, refresher trainings, coaching, and knowledge-sharing activities.
- Strengthened clinical governance through the development and improvement of assessment tools, counseling protocols, supervision systems, referral pathways, documentation standards, and quality assurance mechanisms.
- Timely submission of technical reports, supervision records, field monitoring reports, and other required documentation with high standards of quality and accuracy.
- Effective coordination with internal teams, government stakeholders, development partners, and professional networks to strengthen programme implementation and technical collaboration.
- Compliance with KOSHISH's Human Resource Policies, Code of Conduct, Safeguarding Policy, Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse Policy, and other applicable organizational policies and procedures.
