Title: Textile tailoring training focusing on upcycling for female Informal Waste Workers of Safai Yodda (a Non-Profit Enterprise of informal waste workers) supported by Healthy Waste Workers for Sustainable Waste Management Project
Project Overview
Green Path Nepal (GPN) was established for the environment protection, climate change and natural resource conservation with right based approach to the community people as well as policy makers, development workers and civil society. GPN has long experience in designing, developing and implementing the programs on waste management, natural resource management, environmental conservation, energy, water and sanitation, climate change adaptation and disaster risk management. GPN strives to successfully assist people, organization’s, systems and processes in Nepal and works closely with national entities to positively contribute to the promotion of the better health and environmental status and the empowerment of communities in Nepal.
GPN in collaboration with Samyukta Safai Jagaran (SASAJA) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is implementing “Healthy Waste Workers for Sustainable Waste Management (HWW4SWM)” project funded by Médecins du Monde (MdM). This project has three main expected outcomes: 1) Formalization of IWWs through non-profit enterprises and increasing their recognition in integrated solid waste management in urban cities, 2) Increase risk mitigation and promotion of decent safe work opportunities in current activities and through innovation, 3) Increase access to quality health services for IWWs and the community through promotion of Urban Health Promotion Centre.
Objective
The overall objective of this consultancy is to provide textile-based training for female informal waste workers of Safai Yodda, non-profit enterprises of waste workers supported through HWW4SWM project to enhance their skill on tailoring of upcycled items which can be marketable with substantially improved quality. The training will focus on the concept of upcycling, which involves repurposing and transforming textile waste materials into new products. This training aims to create capacitated female waste worker entrepreneurs who can use their skill to uplift their livelihood.
Scope
The training program should cover the essentials of tailoring, including techniques for cutting, stitching, and finishing. Participants should learn how to create garments and other textile products using upcycled materials. The consultant/firm shall design and deliver a training curriculum that covers the following topics:
- Advanced tailoring techniques, including pattern making
- Provide hands-on training to the beneficiaries, using a combination of lectures, demonstrations and practice sessions
- Assist in the development of a business plan, including identifying potential markets and pricing strategies
Deliverables
- A detailed training curriculum and lesson plan
- Training materials and equipment, as needed
- Introduce new and innovative products that may be created using waste textile material as per market trends focusing on product diversification.
- The training should ensure that the final product would have an improved quality and finishing.
- Explain the elements of costing and pricing of the final product.
Training location
The trainer shall conduct training at their institute.
GPN will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Arrange participants for the training.
- Help consultant finalize the training content and methodology
- Participate in the consultative process as per plan and when required
- Facilitate the administrative process from GPN side if required
The consultant, in collaboration with GPN and its partners, will create a comprehensive training program customized to the specific needs of Safai Yodda. The target audience for the training is women informal waste workers and have limited education therefore the consultant is expected to provide a training curriculum tailor made to their needs and skills. The training approach should be interactive, thought-provoking, and empowering, and should include opportunities for questions and answers. A team of two trainers is considered necessary for a successful and efficient delivery of the training.
Qualification
- A SEE graduate or Diploma or bachelor’s degree in fashion design, textiles, or a related field
- At least 5 years of professional experience in tailoring
- Experience teaching or training others in tailoring
- Familiarity with sustainable production methods and an interest in working with marginalized communities
- Strong communication skills, as well as patience and flexibility to adapt to the needs and learning styles of the participants
These qualifications would ensure that the consultant has the necessary knowledge and experience to design and deliver an effective training curriculum. Additionally, familiarity with sustainable production methods and an interest in working with marginalized community would align with the project’s goal of reducing waste and empowering disadvantaged groups.

Duration
This consulting project will have a duration of one month, calculated based on working days. In the event of any changes, the time frame can be adjusted through mutual agreement.
