1. BACKGROUND

The UK Nepal – Nepal in Business – Growth Advisors (NiB – GA) programme, launched in July 2024, is a five-year initiative funded by UK International Development and implemented by DAI Global UK. NiB - GA aims to unlock economic prosperity in Nepal by fostering the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), creating new jobs, and driving private sector-led economic growth. NiB consists of two main components:

  • Business Support Facility: Provides technical assistance and investment to SMEs to enhance their productivity, competitiveness, and potential for job creation while making them investment ready in the long run.
  • Business Environment Reform Facility: Engages with government stakeholders and private sector associations to reform business regulations, reduce trade barriers, and improve the overall enabling environment for businesses in Nepal.

2. INTRODUCTION

Nepal’s carpet industry is characterised as hand woven, niche, and resource intensive sector, with a long history of carpet weaving. Nepalese carpets have distinct characteristics, and Nepal ranks among the world’s leading producers of handmade carpets, standing as the third-largest manufacturer globally. Over the decades, Nepal has developed a distinct identity in the global carpet market, producing 100 percent handmade carpets that cater to high-value niche segments. Nepalese carpets are especially sought after by boutique hotels, carpet collectors, and high-profile individual clients due to their unique designs, superior craftsmanship, and cultural authenticity.

At the same time, the market faces reputational risks from other countries marketing their products as ‘Nepali handwoven carpets’. Such misrepresentation undermines consumer trust, creates dissatisfaction among buyers, and dilutes the authenticity and brand value of genuine Nepali carpets. Thus, it is necessary to promote the collective trademark in the carpets industry to inform the international markets about Nepal’s carpets authenticity and originality under the collective trademark. To achieve this, NiB and Nepal Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters of Nepal (NCMEA) like to develop a high-quality promotional video to inform the international markets about the Nepali carpets trademark and quality associated with the trademark.

3. OBJECTIVE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

In collaboration with NiB and NCMEA the assignment will develop the collective trademark video which will be used as a strategic branding asset to enhance buyers’ confidence, support trademark enforcement, and strengthen Nepal’s positioning in premium international carpet markets as credible carpet manufacturer.
