Sano Sansar HIO (Hands In Outreach) - Nepal: Sano Sansar is a non-profit and non-governmental organization. It provides access to education and a supportive social network that empowers marginalized urban poor girls and women in Kathmandu to lift themselves from deep-rooted poverty. An integrated, family-centric and inclusive educational program is the core intervention of the organization. 

The organization strives to prevent girls and women from being subjected to physical, mental, or any other forms of harm at home, in school, or in any other places or situations.

Job Description - Teacher, Sano Sansar

Overview:

The Teacher is a key, front-line position that encourages the academic growth and well-being of beneficiaries the organization serves. The position is located in Kathmandu, with some travel required throughout Kathmandu Valley. Service contract of six months initially with annual renewal or on permanent basis upon achieving or exceeding performance expectations.

Responsibilities:

The Teacher is responsible for the day-to-day management of a classroom in a Montessori-based early learning center and assisting with afterschool programming and other outreach activities of the organization. The Teacher helps establish a firm foundation of learning for young children and instill a belief in the power of education throughout the communities the organization serves.

Teaching Role

  • Contribute to creating a child-friendly learning environment for vulnerable, urban poor children and their families.
  • Serve as the key person in charge of teaching one grade of young children.
  • Implement Montessori and English curriculum according to school standards - create lesson plans, make, organize and maintain teaching materials, design and administer assessments and evaluate progress toward school objectives.
  • Complete regular progress reports at the individual and program level, identifying successes and problem areas.
  • Meet with parents and guardians to discuss student progress and develop plans for future success.
  • Serve as a tutor and mentor for afterschool programming for girls in grade 1-10, including weekly virtual Zoom Storytime sessions and extracurricular activities.

Member of Teaching and Social Work Team

  • Assist with coordinating and implementing outreach activities such as food distributions and health camps.
  • Assist with crisis management.
  • Contribute to regular staff meetings and help create a culture of collaboration.
  • Attend professional development workshops and training.

Education

  • Minimum Bachelor’s level in education with Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience

  • At least 2 years experience working in a teaching capacity with underprivileged and urban poor communities.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Recognized commitment to girls’ and women’s empowerment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in Nepali and English.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work calmly under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and to work in a team setting with an understanding of collaboration, communication, and coordination.
  • Growth mindset - willingness to take risks, work hard, think critically, and learn from mistakes.
  • Flexibility - ability to multitask and work outside of normal business hours.
  • Excellent computer skills using Google Workspace, Microsoft, and Zoom platforms.
  • High level of professional integrity and trustworthiness.
