Job Description of Senior Communications Officer

Position: Senior Communications Officer (Female candidate only)

Reports to: Nepal Country Director (NCD)

Supervises: Program and Communication Assistant

Coordinates with: Program, MERL, Field, Partners, and US teams.

Location: Nepal Country Office, Lalitpur, with at least 25% field visits.

A) Background:

dZi Foundation is a US-based non-profit organization working with rural communities in Nepal to achieve prosperity by eliminating barriers to basic needs, fostering opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, and building their capacity to catalyze transformational change. dZi partners with communities for three multi-year stages to support complementary health, education, and livelihood programs that unlock local opportunities, build more unified communities, and create lasting solutions to complex local challenges. dZi provides communities with the skills and resources needed to design and implement these community-led projects. B) Job Purpose:

Communications promote dZi Foundation/Nepal’s efforts and achievements in its key strategic intervention among the organization’s target audiences. The Senior Communications Officer (SCO) will be responsible for building support for development by identifying opportunities for targeted, innovative communications that catalyze change in key constituencies while offering compelling stories and reinforcing the brand. Several communication channels are important for building and maintaining a positive profile for dZi’s work and the staff dedicated to achieving our mission. The SCO will be responsible for collecting & compelling stories, and communication resources including photos and videos, and acts as a communication bridge between communications between dZi and primarily dZi’s external audience. Moreover, the SCO will provide support in the production of communications materials, the organization’s campaigns, events, and meetings to promote dZi’s works, mission, and values.

C) Responsibilities:

1. Collecting and Compiling field stories:

  • Coordinate, translate, and craft compelling success or impact stories from the field.
  • Develop plans for regular sharing of stories from the field.
  • Coordinates with relevant teams to get great stories from the field.
  • Provide key highlight stories to the dZi’s newsletter.

2. Communication resources collection

  • Takes photos/video footage of activities, people, events, community people, meetings, and events related to dZi.
  • Supervise proper documentation of the collected communication materials.
  • Use the collected resources to be able to share to target donors, social media use, and other purposes.

3. Develop, implement, and evaluate the implementation of Communication Materials

  • Implement dZi’s communication strategy through composing, developing, and sharing media of project activities in the field, including photography, written work, and video that will be shared through various means including print materials, reports, website, and social media.
  • Manage (update & monitor) the website, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook pages to provide up-to-date information.
  • Produce accurate, clear, and consistent communication messages to highlight dZi’s work via different communications channels (website, Facebook, publications, events, newsletters, etc.)
  • Ensure the development of high-quality, visually appealing, and brand-aligned communications materials to achieve communications objectives.
  • Monitor and evaluate communication effectiveness through an evidence-based approach and propose improvements.

4. Support program and marketing-related works to reach targeted audiences.

  • With the support of program staff, generate feature stories, infographics, and other presentation materials for both internal and external communications.
  • Supervise/Support the development of video clips, TOR, storyline, scripts, and translation and work with filmmakers to ensure the quality.
  • Support marketing and external engagement-related activities such as public events and field visits with the engagement of media, donors, and other key stakeholders.
  • Build the capacity of dZi’s staff to understand communications approaches and requirements to bring effective communications with external stakeholders.

5. Communications-related knowledge management

  • Establish and manage database and resources for communications purposes.
  • Design templates and examples of communications materials such as progress reports, blogs, and PowerPoint slides.

6. Other duties as required.

  • Provide interpretation and translation when necessary.
  • Perform tasks assigned by the supervisor.

D) Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • At least a bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication, public relations, or a relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.

Prior Work Experience:

  • Progressive professional experience of more than 3 years in a relevant role within inter/national development organizations.
  • Should have demonstrated leadership roles in assessing, designing, and implementing media strategies and content for a range of audiences and in a mix of communications outlets.
  • Preferences will be given to the candidates demonstrating progressive professional experience with diverse donor-funded projects and proven experience in content creation for social media platforms.
  • Understanding of the media landscapes at the national and sub-national levels and demonstrated experience in securing media coverage for an organization, is desirable.
  • Should possess experience in exceptional copywriting and copyediting, including creative writing and writing for diverse stakeholders.

Software:

Prior proven experience in using most, if not all of the following software is desirable:

  • WordPress (Basic Knowledge of Web-based Management Systems-Beaver Builder Plugin for Content Upload and Basic Design)
  • Meta Business Suite (Basic Knowledge of Social Media Management Tools for Content Scheduling, Boosting, and more)
  • Google Analytics & Meta Insights (Basic Understanding of Media Monitoring and Analytics to Monitor and Analyze Trends)
  • Adobe Software
    • Premiere Pro (Knowledge of Video Editing Software)
    • Photoshop and Lightroom (Knowledge of Photo software)
    • Report/Graphic Design: Canva / InDesign (Knowledge of Designing Software)

Skill and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal English and Nepali language skill is a must.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and the ability to work creatively.
  • Strong organizational skills to balance competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently to meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Strong and empathetic interpersonal skills to work in harmony with diverse team members.
  • Excellent computer skills including a high level of competency with Microsoft Office, and photo and video editing software.
  • Experience with digital photography and video.

Physical Requirement:

  • Extensive hours sitting in front of a computer.
  • Willingness to travel to the field (at least 25%) with limited supervision, guidance, and conditions.
