Freedom Studio (FS) is a creative initiative that works to expand freedom and justice by integrating art, media, and technology. We research, document, artvocate, campaign, and collaborate to amplify new social movements around the globe. We create digital discourse to expand civic space and make communities more inclusive, resilient, democratic, and peaceful. 

Job Profile:

FS is currently developing a learning corner for social movements in Nepal. We believe such a corner will create a space for social movements to gain knowledge and tactics of activism, network and engage with each other, and generate resources through civic institutions and international organizations. Learning Corner will help to expand the vibrancy of civic space in Nepal, where movement builders and activists have the necessary knowledge, capacity, and resources to organize and mobilize citizens in the most strategic, creative, and non-violent way and build the power of their activism/movement.

The Research Officer will work as a core team member of Freedom Studio, where he/she will be responsible for the development of the learning corner. His/Her task will be to conduct extensive research on social movements through desk review, field visits, report analysis, and creative engagement with the leaders of social movements. 

This position is on a contractual basis. We expect daily seven hours of work commitment from Sunday to Friday. 

Major responsibilities: 

  • Develop a database of social movements existing in Nepal. 
  • Identify groups, demands, geographical influence, and progress of each social movement. 
  • Design research tools, indicators, and methodology to include overall information about the movement. 
  • Review secondary information and conduct online/offline interviews with movement leaders. 
  • Write a high-quality analysis of the movement’s tactics and strategies. 
  • Collaborate with a web designer to develop an interactive map of the movement. 
  • Support Freedom Studio’s overall research effort. 
  • Support the creative team in writing high-quality captions for social media posts.  
  • Perform other duties related to the job as assigned by the supervisor and the leadership team.

Qualification and Skills Required:

  • Experience in leading research, monitoring and evaluation, and high-quality report writing.    
  • Quantitative as well as Qualitative data analysis. 
  • Hold a relevant master’s or bachelor’s degree (for, e.g., Economics, Development Studies) with at least two years of relevant experience. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of social and political issues related to social movements, civic engagement, governance, public policy, community-driven development etc. 
  • Effective communication skills and extensive experience in planning and accomplishing goals.
  • Good command of Nepali and English language (both writing and speaking). 
  • Have access to own laptop for official use.
  • Hardworking, adaptive, result-oriented, and a good team player. 
  • Flexible work timing. Willing to work on off days and public holidays.
