REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL: Research on Landscape Analysis of Urbanization in Nepal Or Scoping Study for Urban Programming

World Vision is a child focused relief, development and advocacy organization that has contributed to transformation in the lives of millions of children around the world in vulnerable situations. We are looking for potential Nepalese Consultant Service Providers to undertake the following assignment:

Consultancy Service: Research on Landscape Analysis of Urbanization in Nepal Or Scoping Study for Urban Programming

Around the world, urbanization and people living and migrating to urban centers is in increasing trend; and the trend is similar in context of Nepal. WVI Nepal has been working in urban programs esp. for well being of children living in vulnerability and vulnerable urban areas. With the changing context and vulnerability for children living in urban areas; WVI Nepal has planned to conduct a research to review the status of urbanization and analyze the trend and driving factors for urbanization with in depth studies in targeted cities in different provinces. This study will be helpful for World Vision to better understand the previous and current status and issues of urbanization in Nepal for child wellbeing. The landscape analysis and recommendation will help to define Urban Roadmap for WVI Nepal which will align to upcoming country strategic cycle 2026-2030. It also helps the national and local government priorities and policies for urban planning and to accommodate for this urbanization. It will be a guiding document for Programme planning and designing to address identified issues of child vulnerability, along with families and communities in urban centers of Nepal. The main objective of this study is to review and analyze the status and trend of urbanization in selected locations of Kathmandu Valley, and Janakpur Sub-metropolitan City, Nepalgunj Sub-metropolitan City, and Birendranagar Municipality of Surkhet

In this regard, World Vision International Nepal (WVIN), Kusunti, Lalitpur - 13, invites interested consulting firms or individuals to submit proposals for a consulting assignment based on attached Terms of Reference for (Research on Landscape Analysis of Urbanization in Nepal Or Scoping Study for Urban Programming).

This assessment is expected to:

  • To understand urbanization in the context of Nepal and targeted cities in terms of spatial, social, political, economic, environmental, health, and education situation.
  • To review policies and programs of the government (national and municipal) that impact on the city’s lives especially for children and its inhabitants, especially the most vulnerable population.
  • To review urbanization national/city policies and /or national urban agenda, to better understand the government position and response to urbanization. 
  • To map vulnerability and locate vulnerable pockets in targeted cities for children's wellbeing. 
  • Analyze stakeholders, their networks, and relationships supporting functioning cities in Nepal.
  • To prioritization of issues based on spatial analysis, of where are the issues within a city, who is working on them, government plans and donor interest.

Qualification for Research Lead:

The principal investigator should have an advanced degree in Urban development, Economics, Gender studies, Development Studies, Sociology, or a related discipline with a minimum of five years of experience in conducting similar research studies.

Skills and experience of the Team:

  • The other technical team members should have strong knowledge and experiences that are essential for conducting similar research studies.  
  • The team members should have demonstrated experience in study design using methodological variation, varied tools, and data review and analysis.  
  • Experience of working in children vulnerability in urban context.
  • Experience in working on cultural, humanitarian, and related social issues particularly in the urban issues and location.  
  • Experience working with women and children using participatory method in reference to urban concerns.
  • Experience working on a consultative process and qualitative research methods.  
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of research methodologies and processes; 
  • Experience in gathering, systematizing, reviewing and analyzing documents/literature/data/information.
