SCOPE OF WORK

Equal Access International (EAI) – a non-governmental organization (NGO) headquartered in Washington, D.C. – partners with communities around the world to co-create sustainable solutions utilizing community engagement and participatory media and technology. With funding from bi-laterals, multi-laterals, foundations, and individual donors, EAI has over 20-years of successfully implementing social change projects and currently operates in Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Kenya, Mali, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, and the Philippines.

BACKGROUND:

The Change Starts at Home (Change) project was launched by Equal Access International (EAI) in May 2021, to address intimate partner violence (IPV) in Nepal, by providing couples the knowledge, skills and space to re-evaluate how they see their relationship, and their roles as ‘husband and wife’. The Change project addresses the existing negative social and gender norms, attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate women and girl's low status in the family/society and works specifically with married couples to address power imbalances in relationships.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

EAI is seeking 2-3 qualified and proficient qualitative data collection consultants to conduct in-depth interviews with selected individuals for the endline evaluation of the Change Starts at Home project. The Change Project is planning to conduct an end-line evaluation with couples individuals, and Government representatives to assess the impact of the intervention on preventing intimate partner violence. The evaluation will use mixed approaches of quantitative and qualitative data collection. The consultants hired will be trained on the research methodology and tools by Emory University, before being deployed to the target district Nawalpur for approximately 10 days of data collection. This will be followed by approximately further 10 days transcribing and sending data for analysis.

EAI is seeking applications from interested individuals for the position of qualitative data collection consultant. The consultants will be responsible for collecting, translating and transcribing qualitative interview data.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • A general overview of responsibilities under this SOW is included below:
  • Participate in a 5 day training conducted by the research partner and the EAI team.
  • Work with lead research partner and EAI team during the training to provide feedback on the qualitative tools.
  • Develop field plan in coordination with the local implementation partner.
  • Conduct qualitative interviews with key actors/stakeholders.
  • Transcribe the field notes from Nepali into English and provide to the EAI team.
  • Provide regular updates on the data collection to EAI, and other reporting tasks as required.

EXPERTISE:

  • At least 5+ years of experience conducting qualitative interviews in Nepali
  • Experience interviewing participants on sensitive subjects, including gender-based violence
  • Ability to use mobile based survey tool applications, including commcare or similar
  • Understanding of safety protocols and procedures when conducting sensitive interviews
  • Fluent in Nepali and English (writing and speaking)
  • Good communicator
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

AVAILABLE RESOURCE MATERIALS:

EAI will provide the consultant with the necessary documents. While EAI will provide some background documents, the consultant is also expected to identify and use resources via electronic and print media and solicit additional information and resources, as appropriate.

TRAVEL:

The consultant is expected to travel.

PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE:

The period of performance for this Scope of Work is from May 1, 2023, through May 31, 2023.

Training Dates: May 1-5, 2023 (tentative)

Data collection: May 6–16, 2023 (tentative)

Translation and transcription: May 17–31, 2023 (tentative)
