The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit, with sites offices in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia and Kathmandu in Nepal.

Purpose of the job position

The Public Engagement (PE) Officer is responsible to support the research conducted by Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) Nepal by implementing public engagement activities and initiatives under the supervision of PE manager. This role involves interaction with the community, organizing public engagement events, and acting as the bridge between the research community and the public to ensure effective communication of the research conducted at OUCRU Nepal. 

Key responsibilities and tasks

The PE Officer will report to the PE Manager and will be responsible for:

1. Community Engagement and field work:

  • Actively participate in field visits to communities involved in our research.
  • Organize and facilitate public engagement events, community meetings, and workshops in field settings.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, local leaders, and research participants.
  • Support formation and implementation of community advisory boards.
  • Assist clinical trial teams in community engagement and participant support during recruitment phases.
  • Collect community feedback and insights to inform engagement strategies and improve relevance.

2. Communication and material development

  • Work with scientists and the PE team to develop appropriate communication and engagement materials (e.g. posters, flyers, audio-visual content) and distribute it in the community.
  • Translate and adapt scientific content into formats suitable for public audiences in both English and Nepali.
  • Contribute to OUCRU Nepal’s social media presence and online communications.
  • Ensure that engagement outputs are culturally appropriate, clear, and impactful.
  • Work with the wider engagement team to support appropriate public engagement projects,
  • Represent OUCRU Nepal PE team to communicate about the research activities as required.

3. Participant Recruitment:

  • Work in coordination with the PE team members to implement the strategies to enhance participant recruitment for studies,
  • Work closely with the researchers and scientists to inform and support participants to participate in the research,

4. Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of engagement activities conducted in the community.
  • Report on activities to the public engagement manager.
  • Assist PE manager to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of public engagement activities using the established metrics system at OUCRU.

5. Social science research:

  • Develop data collection tools and collect data for social science and ethnographic research conducted by PE department.
  • Conduct transcription and translation of interviews, discussions, or field notes when required.

6. Others:

  • Carry out duties as reasonably required by OUCRU Nepal.
Requirements

  • Education:
    • Master’s degree in Public Health, Nursing, Social Sciences, Sociology, Anthropology or a related field. 
  • Experience:
    • 1-3 years of experience in public engagement or a related field,
    • Knowledge of clinical research and experience of conducting qualitative research,
    • Experience in developing educational materials like booklets, brochures etc.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
    • Flexibility and out-spoken,
    • Good command of English language,
    • Social and diplomacy skills,
    • Respects group dynamics.
