1. Introduction

Bheri Environmental Excellence Group (BEE-Group) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit making, non-governmental organisation founded by a group of academicians and professionals, established in 2000 AD in Banke District. It has been working on a Rights-Based Approach on issues such as Social Justice, Peace, Human Rights, Democratic Development, Governance and Accountability, Environment Conservation and Community Development through community empowerment and local resources mobilization. It works for the attainment of peace, development and justice through meaningful participation of the marginalized, socially excluded and disadvantaged groups and a bottom-up approach. 

Currently, BEE Group is implementing a project “Supporting Occupational and Environmental Health (SOEH)” in Nepalgunj Sub metropolitan city, Khajura and Duduwa rural municipalities of Banke district in partnership with Médecins du Monde (MdM). Within the SOEH project, BEE Group Banke is implementing supporting organic farming promotion through health risk mitigation activities among farmers.

2. About the Project

Project Name: Supporting Occupational and Environmental Health in Banke (SOEH)/ Organic farming promotion through health risk mitigation among farmers in Banke district.

Overall project duration: 2 years

Location: Nepalgunj, Duduwa and Khajura of Banke.

The Project is implemented in coordination with Nepalgunj sub-metropolitan city, Duduwa Rural Municipal and Khajura Rural Municipal, and the technical, and financial support from Médecins Du Monde- France (MDM-F) and local implementing partner Bheri Environment Excellency Group (BEE-Group).

The project goal is to mitigate the negative impacts of pesticide exposure on the health of farmers located in and around the Nepalgunj area.

Overall objective: The negative impacts of pesticide exposure on the health of farmers located in and around the Nepalgunj area are reduced.

To achieve this objective, awareness on pesticide exposure and health consequences is raised, farmers are supported in dealing with the effects of pesticide-exposure, and the reduction of pesticide usage is promoted. 

3. Purpose of the assignment

The purpose is to conduct a market survey to identify alternative models for farming to mitigate the pesticide risks among vegetable grown farmers, understand the level of pesticide use, and linkages to the potential market for organic/IPM products.

The market survey should cover the following questions: 

1. Analyze the awareness level in the use, misuse, and rational use of pesticides.
2. Analyze the rules, regulations, and actual status of pesticide use and pesticides available in Banke and across the border with India. 
3. Propose alternative farming models and their possibilities of application (organic/IPM) in the project implementation sites of Banke districts.
4. Identify possible markets and linkages for IPM/organic product, and explain market and certification process for IPM/organic products.
5. The questions will be addressed in the Consultant’s report, which will constitute the Deliverables.
