Job Title: Bus Driver – BookBus Nepal Initiative

Location: Kathmandu, Nepal (with extensive travel across project locations)

Reporting to: Project Officer

Position Type: Full-time, Fixed-term (duration as per project timeline)

Salary: NPR ( 45,000-55,000)

Overview of the Role:

The Bus Driver for the BookBus Nepal Initiative is a crucial member of the project team, responsible for safely transporting the BookBus to various locations across Nepal. The driver will ensure the vehicle is well-maintained, follow planned routes, and assist with logistics during events. This role requires a reliable and experienced driver with a commitment to safety and an interest in contributing to the project’s mission of promoting education and reading culture among youth and children in marginalized communities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safe and Efficient Driving:
    • Safely operate the BookBus vehicle, ensuring adherence to all traffic laws and regulations.
    • Follow predetermined routes and schedules, ensuring timely arrival at project locations.
    • Conduct regular checks of the vehicle to ensure it is in good working condition, including fuel, oil, water, lights, tires, and brakes.
    • Report any mechanical issues immediately to the Project Officer and coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Vehicle Maintenance:
    • Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the BookBus, both inside and outside.
    • Ensure the vehicle is regularly serviced and maintained according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and project requirements.
    • Keep accurate records of vehicle maintenance, fuel usage, and any repairs conducted.
  • Support During Project Activities:
    • Assist with the setup and dismantling of equipment and materials during BookBus visits and events.
    • Support the Project Officer and BookBus Fellows in logistics, including loading and unloading books, materials, and equipment.
    • Act as a liaison with local communities during visits, providing friendly and helpful service.
  • Safety and Security:
    • Ensure the safety of passengers, which may include project staff, BookBus Fellows, and community members, at all times.
    • Implement and follow safety protocols, particularly when children and youth are boarding or alighting from the bus.
    • Monitor and manage the security of the vehicle and its contents, particularly when parked in public spaces.
    • Follow proper check in and check out procedures of the Bus from its primary station in Phora Durbar
  • Communication and Reporting:
    • Maintain clear communication with the Project Officer regarding the vehicle’s status, schedule, and any issues encountered.
    • Report daily on vehicle usage, including mileage and any incidents or accidents.
    • Keep the Project Officer informed of any potential risks or challenges related to transportation logistics.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Valid Nepali driving license (Class A/B/G) with a clean driving record.
  • At least 10 years of professional driving experience, with large buses
  • Experience driving in various terrains and weather conditions across Nepal.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to navigate and read digital maps and use GPS devices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact positively with children, youth, and community members.
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to safety.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working with non-profit organizations or the BookBus program
  • Interest in contributing to educational and community development projects.
