Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction (IHRR) is an organization established with an objective to assess and understand the risk to contribute to sustainability. Complying with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction(SFDRR), IHRR envisions to understand the risk and application of interdisciplinary knowledge with Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation to contribute for risk reduction and bridging of academic research with professionals and policymakers for sustainability. The team consists of professionals with expertise and experiences in the field of disaster risk management in understanding the risk, conducting academic research, and field-level implementations in Nepal and different parts of the world.

Location: Bhimeshwor and Barabardiya Municipalities


Number for Volunteers: 100+  [50 in each municipality]

Background: 

VICTORY is a ADPC Innovation Fund Project, implemented by the Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction, together with the support from S4W-Nepal, DCA Nepal, Bhimeshwor and Barbardiya Municipality. The project merges low-cost hardware and innovative software solutions to empower communities and contribute to the development of robust datasets on precipitation across the municipality. From customized Precipitation Measurement devices to the VICTORY Mobile App with a web-visualization dashboard, VICTORY aims to contribute towards preparing risk informed communities.

Objective: 

We are seeking dedicated volunteers to collect the data throughout the monsoon season within Bhimeshwor and Barabardiya Municipality. This data will contribute significantly towards the distribution of local precipitation patterns into the municipality thereby contributing towards the Early Warning System. It is also vital for various scientific studies, climate research, and community planning initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Assist in installation of low-cost rain gauge at designated locations within the municipalities.

  2. Regularly monitor and record rainfall measurements at specified intervals.

  3. Maintain and ensure the functionality of rain gauge equipment.

  4. Accurately record and report collected data digitally.

  5. Participate in training sessions to understand proper data collection techniques and protocols.

  6. Collaborate with fellow volunteers and coordinators to ensure smooth data collection operations.

Qualifications

1. Enthusiasm for environmental science and community engagement.

2. Ability to commit to regular data collection schedules throughout the monsoon period (May to October).

4. Reliability and punctuality in fulfilling assigned tasks.

5. Willingness to learn and adapt to new methodologies.

6. Basic understanding of meteorological concepts (preferred but not mandatory).


Time Commitment:

Volunteers will be required to dedicate at least 10 minutes each day and one hour Virtual Weekly Call for rain gauge data collection. The specific schedule will be delivered after recruitment. Based on the requirement, the Citizen Scientist should also designate time for any queries or issues.

Training:

Training sessions will be provided to all volunteers to familiarize them with rain gauge installation, data collection procedures, Early Warning System protocols, and community engagement strategies. These sessions will ensure that volunteers are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
