Development of Video-Based Training Materials on Dairy Animal Management
1. Background
Heifer Project Nepal (HPN) is a non-governmental development organization working to end hunger and poverty through sustainable agriculture and livestock development. For nearly three decades, Heifer Nepal has been supporting smallholder farmers particularly women and marginalized communities to improve their livelihoods through improved livestock management, cooperative strengthening, and market-oriented agriculture. The organization works in partnership with local governments, cooperatives, and community-based institutions to promote inclusive and sustainable agricultural systems.
As part of its efforts to strengthen Nepal’s dairy sector, Heifer Nepal is implementing the Milky Way Program, which aims to improve dairy productivity, increase farmer income, and strengthen dairy value chains. The program supports farmers to adopt improved practices in animal husbandry, breeding, feeding, and farm management while also strengthening milk producers’ cooperatives. To support continuous farmer learning, the program is establishing digital learning platforms at cooperatives and developing short, practical video-based training materials on key dairy farming practices that farmers can easily understand and apply at the farm level.
2. Objective of the Assignment
The objective of this assignment is to develop high-quality, technical video training materials on key dairy farming practices relevant to smallholder dairy farmers in Nepal.
The assignment aims to translate technical dairy management knowledge into simple, practical, and visually engaging training materials that farmers can easily understand and apply. The videos will support improved knowledge and skills of dairy farmers in areas such as breeding management, fodder production, animal care, and cost-effective milk production.
3. Scope of Work
The consultant or firm will be responsible for developing the content, script, and video materials related to dairy animal management. Each video will be approximately five minutes in duration and will focus on a specific technical topic relevant to dairy farmers.
The topics to be covered include the following:
i. Critical points and considerations for Artificial Insemination (AI) to be followed by farmers and AI technicians.
ii. Commercial fodder and forage cultivation.
iii. Breeding management of dairy animals.
iv. Care and management of dairy animals under different age groups and physiological conditions, including calves, heifers, pregnant animals, and recently calved animals.
v. Selection of dairy animals, including key points to consider when purchasing cattle or buffalo and age estimation using dentition.
The consultant will ensure that the technical content is accurate, practical, and aligned with good dairy farming practices applicable in Nepal. The videos should present clear demonstrations of recommended practices and communicate key messages in a simple and farmer-friendly manner.
The assignment will involve reviewing relevant technical resources, developing scripts and visual concepts, conducting field-based video shooting where necessary, and producing professionally edited instructional videos suitable for display on digital learning platforms at milk producers’ cooperatives.
4. Video Production Requirements
Each video should be approximately five minutes long and designed to be clear, practical, and engaging for farmers. The content should use simple, easy-to-understand Nepali language and focus on practical demonstrations and actions that farmers can apply on their farms. The videos should include real farm scenarios, visual demonstrations, graphics, animations, and clear narration to reinforce key messages. The final videos should highlight important dairy management practices that improve animal health, productivity, and profitability, and should be suitable for use through digital learning platforms at milk producers’ cooperatives as well as in farmer training and extension activities.
