Terms of Reference for Artists on Creation of Comic Book on Climate-Smart Dairy Farming in Nepal

Background:

Heifer Project Nepal (HPN) is implementing a project "Climate Smart Dairy Farming in Nepal" with funding support from AGCO Agriculture Foundation through Heifer Netherland. The dairy sector is a vital source of livelihood, nutrition, and food security in Nepal. However, dairy animal farming is also one of the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which exacerbate the effects of climate change and affect the sustainability of dairy farming. The project aims to produce dissemination materials to create awareness on climate-smart dairy farming practices and project activities. Therefore, HPN seeks artists to create illustrations for a comic book of around 15 to 20 frames pertaining to "Climate Smart Dairy Farming in Nepal".

Key Responsibilities:

• Create illustrations of around 15 to 20 frames or panels, focusing on principles of “Climate-smart dairy farming". Examples can include care for cows and calves, teamwork by farmer groups and cooperatives and market actors, sustainability values like minimal wastage and byproduct reusage for clean energy like biogas, and Heifer’s cornerstone values like “passing on the gift”.
• Exercise full creative freedom with artist’s stylistic preference using the overall description of each frame and overview of the story that will be provided by Heifer.
• Utilize a combination of visuals, dynamic angles, sound effects, and text effects (balloons for dialogue) for an immersive reading experience.
• Develop the comic prioritizing the target audience of lower secondary school children.

Key Requirements:

• Experience in making illustrations and artworks, especially for children.
• Both digital and traditional artists are encouraged to apply.
• At least 1 sample of previous work or the link to artist’s work portfolio should be submitted.
• Preference will be given to creative styles, highlighting Nepali culture and environment.

Deliverables:

• Preliminary draft storyboard or mockup illustrations of the entire comic. Intermediary drafts of the comic.
• Final approved comic in Nepali and English versions (textual content will be provided).
• Deliverables can be submitted in either high-quality digital files (E.g. PSD and PDF) or hand-drawn originals. Deliverables include only illustrations only and not the publishing of the materials.

Duration: 3 months from signing of the contract between April to July 2024

HPN reserves the right to accept or reject any proposal and to annul the selection process and reject all proposals at any time prior to contract award, without thereby incurring any liability to affected individuals.
