OVERVIEW: 

Based in Seoul, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is an intergovernmental organization founded to support and promote a model of economic growth known as "green growth", which targets key aspects of economic performance such a poverty reduction, job creation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. GGGI works with countries around the world, building their capacity and working collaboratively on green growth policies that can impact the lives of millions. The organization partners with countries, multilateral institutions, government bodies, and private sector to help build economies that grow strongly and are more efficient and sustainable in the use of natural resources, less carbon intensive, and more resilient to climate change. GGGI has been working in Nepal since 2015, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Population and Environment. In response to requests from the Government of Nepal, GGGI’s Nepal Program is focused on supporting implementation of Nepal’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and supporting green municipal development. Support for the implementation of NDCs will focus on formulating a sectoral action plan, assessing investment opportunities and developing a pilot initiative.

Current Internship Opportunity 

Within this context, GGGI Nepal is looking to recruit an intern to undertake economic and financial analysis and contribute to the research activities of the Nepal team. Specific activities will include: 

  • Collecting and processing data on a range of components related to climate change
  • Undertaking economic and financial analysis of data, including but not restricted to cost-benefit analysis, total cost of ownership analysis and co-benefit analysis 
  • Collecting and analyzing data related to national budget, revenue and capital expenditure and analyzing operational data from selected stakeholders 
  • Analysing investment opportunities for climate change financing within the context of national committments 
  • Collecting information on global and regional best practices for NDC implementation 
  • Responding to emerging research needs within the GGGI Nepal team, in line with recognized work programs and outputs

The successful candidate will have a background in a quantitative discipline, such as economics, financing or accounting, ideally with a disciplinary focus on climate change, environmental management or development. In addition to this disciplinary background, the successful candidate would be able to demonstrate a range of capacities including:

  • Excellent command of English, especially written English
  • Solid quantitative reasoning and analytical excellence
  • Good data management practice and solid command of Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity, but not necessarily experience, with economic and financial modelling and accounting techniques
  • Familiarity with the core concepts of climate change and environmental management
  • Willingness to learn new quantitative skillsets
  • An interest in development

Applicants for this internship opportunity are expected to:

  • Either, be currently enrolled in a Master's or a Ph.D. program in economics, finance or accounting;
  • Or, have completed a Master’s or Ph.D program in economics, finance or accounting within the last 12 months?
  • Be a Nepali national
  • Be willing and able to work office hours Monday-Friday, 09:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs

Duration: The internship lasts for at least three months, and can be extended for an additional three-month period to make a make a maximum total of six months.

Remuneration: GGGI interns are paid USD 500 per month.

Cost: All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern.

Medical insurance: Interns must present proof of valid medical insurance to GGGI.

Confidentiality: Interns must be discreet and keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information.
