Mercy Corps Nepal works to build the absorptive, adaptive and transformative potential of vulnerable individuals and communities across Nepal. The goal is attained through a systems based approach to market development, financial services, disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation and youth engagement. Mercy Corps began its operation in Nepal in 2005, with projects focusing on the sectors of economic and food security; climate, natural resource and disaster risk management; youth engagement; with the inclusion of women and disadvantaged groups as important cross-cutting themes throughout each intervention area.

STEM II:

Supporting the Education of Marginalised Girls in Kailali (STEM II) is a project funded by UKAID under Girls Education Challenges (GEC) programme. The project is led by Mercy Corps and implemented by Backward Society Education with an aim to improve the life chances of marginalized girls in Kailali. The project is undertaken through a series of activities, such as awareness raising campaigns, formation of girls’ clubs, teachers' capacity building trainings, school management trainings, infrastructure support to schools, financial literacy classes, and vocational trainings with complementary low interest collateral free loan opportunities. The project works primarily with three categories of girls: (a) those studying in between grades 8 and 10 in 2017, termed as in school (IS) girls; (b) those who have graduated from grade 10 since 2014, termed as school graduates girls (SG); and (c) those who were previously enrolled at secondary level but have dropped out from the school since 2009, termed as out-of-school (OOS) girls.

Globally, 31 million primary school going age girls have never been to school. And the majority of these girls come from the poorest and most marginalized communities of the most disadvantaged locations, ethnic groups, etc. In the last two decades, girls' enrolment at the primary level has improved along with boys, but completion rate is low for both sexes. In fact, the varying rate of participation of boys and girls seems to be visible in the secondary level. Significant disparities exist within countries, with the poorest girls from rural areas most severely subject to educational disadvantage - even at the primary level. The GEC is helping the world’s poorest girls improve their lives through education by creating supportive school environment and ensuring they receive quality education to transform their future.

Nepal is no exception to this global context relating to the status of girls' education. STEM II project is working with 30 public schools in Kailali to increase learning achievement of IS girls and improve their life chances. It is proved that girls can break the cycle of marginalization provided that they receive conducive educational environment in schools. In this context, the project aims to prepare a document that can be utilized as a guideline for teaching mathematics at public schools through child centric teaching methodologies.

Mercy Corps Nepal invites applications from qualified individuals/firms for the specified consultancy service to develop a guideline on “Better teaching methodologies for Mathematics in Public School – a minimum standard”. Interested firms/Individuals should submit their proposal along with the copies of company registration, tax registration, latest tax clearance certificates, curriculum vitae,(in case of Firm) and curriculum vitae/profile, experience letters, recommendations, PAN/VAT registration certificate(in case of Individuals) to np-procurement@mercycorps.org  no later than 31^st December 2019. The incomplete proposals or proposals received after closing date will not be considered.

Only shortlisted organizations and individuals will be contacted for further process. Canvassing at any stage of the process shall lead to automatic disqualification of the application.  Mercy Corps reserves the right to accept or reject any or all proposals without assigning any reason.
