The Centre for Mental Health and Counselling–Nepal (CMC-Nepal), a national-level NGO dedicated to promoting mental health and psychosocial well-being, is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Psychosocial Counsellor in Karnali Earthquake Recovery Project-MHPSS. The Karnali Earthquake Recovery Project-MHPSS, funded and supported by CBM Global, aims to contribute Improved well-being and resilience communities affected by the 2023 Jajarkot earthquake.” It is being implemented in Barekot Rural Municipality and Nalgad Municipality of Jajarkot District and Sanibheri of Rukum West District of Karnali Province, Nepal. 

1. Job title: Psychosocial Counselor

Number of positions: 2 (Two)

Location: Barekot Rural Municipality and Nalgad Municipality, Jajarkot.

Position Overview:

The primary objective of this role is to provide Mental Health and Psychosocial Support/counselling to improve mental health and psychosocial well-being of people affected by Jajarkot Earthquake, persons with disabilities and person with or at risk of mental health conditions and psychosocial disability through the project in mentioned project areas. The individual will be tasked with conducting one to one/group counselling, family sensitization, community awareness, coordination, and reporting on MHPSS responses for CMC-Nepal as designated. 

CMC-Nepal expect close collaboration of the person with the Project team, other staff/volunteers of CMC-Nepal, CSO, OPD and consortium partners, to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of MHPSS during the earthquake response.

Duties and responsibilities for the position:

  • Conduct orientation at community level and provide family sensitization on mental health, psychosocial wellbeing, disability inclusion, disaster responses, and self-care.
  • Provide mental health counseling and psychosocial counselling at community level, provide follow-up and support referral.
  • Support and guide CPSWs in planning, implementation and reporting of community-based activities in coordination with Psychologist Cum MEAL Officer and Project Coordinator.
  • Link person with and at risk of mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities, people affected due to Jajarkot Earthquake and their families with social securities and disability benefits.
  • Provide support in formation and mobilization of Peer Groups and Self-Help Groups, empower them for co-recovery and policy advocacy at local level for mainstreaming disability inclusive mental health and psychosocial support.
  • Conduct periodic visit to Health Facilities supported by the project for services update and coordination. 
  • Work closely with persons with disabilities and Organizations persons with Disabilities (OPD), consortium partners, community social organization for policy advocacy for MHPSS mainstreaming and disability inclusion.
  • Identify and maintain professional relationship with likeminded individuals and organizations in the project area.
  • Collaborate closely with Municipal/District Focal Persons, community-level staff, and volunteers of CMC-Nepal.
  • Work in conjunction with the Project Team for effective and efficient of the assigned project.
  • Support capacity building and supervision of CPSW of the project.
  • Participate in the regular review and coordination meeting organized at local level and share project activities on a monthly/ quarterly basis.

Qualification and experience requirements: 

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Social Work or Public Health or PCL in General Medicine or Nursing and be trained in 6-month psychosocial counselling course under the NHTC or any other recognized professional organization.
  • At least two years of experience having worked as a psychosocial counsellor, preferably working in humanitarian responses and community based MHPSS projects.   
  • Must be highly motivated to work in multi-cultural/ contextual, difficult, and challenging situations, and is expected to have strong leadership and coordination/ communication skills.
  • Must have basic computer skills—MS Word, Excel, PPT, familiar with e-mail correspondence.
  • The candidate should be knowledgeable in writing a report in English and Nepali languages.
  • Demonstrate ability to work in multi-sectoral approach and establish harmonious and effective working relationships both within and outside the organization.
  • Willingness to undertake field visit.
