Lumanti Support Group for Shelter is a non-government organisation dedicated to the alleviation of urban poverty in Nepal through the improvement of shelter conditions. At Lumanti, shelter means the whole living environment, therefore, Lumanti's activities are wide-ranging. They include shelter upgrades, micro-finance, education and children's programmes, good governance, gender equity and advocacy. Lumanti means "memory" in the Newari language. The organization was established in 1993 in the memory of Ramesh Manandhar who died in a plane crash in 1992. Ramesh was a driving force behind moves in the early 1990's to raise awareness about urban poverty and shelter conditions.

Vacancy Announcement for: Program Officer – GESI and SRHR (Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR))

Duty Station: Kohalpur Municipality 

Duration: Initial for six months with possible extension based on excelling and satisfactory performance.

Lumanti Support Group for Shelter a non-government organization actively contributing to the improvement of the living conditions of low income people in Nepal. Lumanti is a NGO working in 5 thematic areas such as shelter, WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), Community Finance, Good Governance and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for the marginalized people in Nepal.

Lumanti is currently implementing WASH SDG Project in Banke funded by Dutch WASH Alliance International (WAI), a consortium of Dutch WASH organization in the Netherlands starting from 2018 July. 

Lumanti is an equal opportunity Employer and is seeking to recruit Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) Officer to regularize program activities associated with gender and social inclusion within its project areas. Person working in this position directly reports and works with the Project Coordinator stationed in Kohalpur, as well as, ensures coordination with project staffs, and also ensures coordination and obtaining support from the Program Manager (In Kathmandu). The GESI and SRHR Officer is expected to be responsible for the following tasks:

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Support and develop GESI and SRHR activities plan based on assessment results, ensuring proper implementation of the Detail Implementation Plan at the field level.
  • Support and coordinate with the field team including representative members of grant partners to promote equity and inclusion integration into program interventions through identifying power imbalances and understand marginalized groups’ vulnerabilities and interest.
  • Provide guidance to WASH team on integrating GESI and SRHR specific requirements in designing, planning and implementing strategic approaches and specific interventions;
  • Support integration of GESI and SRHR aspects into the M&E systems and processes to ensure that gender and inclusivity are reflected in output, outcome and impact level indicators.
  • Ensure collection of disaggregated data of project activities and analyze them at outcome level.
  • Undertake field visits to monitor and track progress of program activities using qualitative research tools from GESI and SRHR prospective.
  • Facilitate and document community concerns and recommendations on how to best overcome identified challenges like engaging men, women, boys and girls from diverse caste/ethnic groups in climate change and behavior change associated with WASH.
  • Closely working with collaborating partners, facilitating GESI and SRHR sensitive processes thereby raising concerns/issues of women and marginalized caste/ethnic groups vulnerabilities and demand in planning and policy dialogue discourse such as multi-stakeholders' engagement workshops, round table discussions, municipal level meetings, and other public discussion and advocacy events.
  • Coordinate GESI and SRHR related capacity building initiatives as per need and demands of the organization, program team members and various stakeholders for integrating gender equality and social inclusion programmatically and institutionally.
  • Support to develop and review GESI and SRHR responsive training curriculum and materials.
  • Support in developing and delivering series of key trainings on GESI and SRHR, based on the different gender and power inclusion/ exclusion dynamics of each program areas and deliver it to the project beneficiaries.
  • Support to develop GESI and SRHR related sensitization training and orientation promotional materials and sensitize local stakeholders in GESI and SRHR and help them to mainstream GESI in the WASH facilities and services.
  • Support field program team members to maximize program participation and increase empowerment opportunities for marginalized groups including People with Disability (PWD), Women, Dalits, Janajatis and as well as generational groups such as children and senior citizens.
  • Establish current awareness on the importance of GESI and SRHR programming among target participant groups including community leaders, government officials of municipality, and rural municipality.
  • Support in developing GESI and SRHR based success stories, learnings, challenges, and case studies for website and publication.
  • Ensure CGD friendly WASH facilities and services as per the national standard emphasizing DRR prospective.
  • Coordinate and support GESI and SRHR related activities such as capacity building trainings for project staff, Palikas, schools, WSUCs and CSOs.
  • Perform other duties as anticipated by program priorities and as instructed by the supervisor. 

Qualifications, skills and experiences:

  • Graduate in Gender Studies, Social Science, Public Health or related field with minimum 2 years’ experience as GESI /SRHR officer in governance, community development, human right and /or similar development projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, fluent written and oral communication skills (Nepali and English) and an ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work and interact with senior officials and political stakeholders for implementation of GESI and SRHR related activities.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Application suite and modern office software packages such as (Microsoft Office Package, Zoom and Microsoft Teams) and standard office equipment.
  • Willingness to work at field level and to travel in the communities regularly.
  • Demonstrate attention to meticulous details, ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members;
  • Knowledge and experiences in developing GESI and SRHR awareness activities and organizing training /meeting programs is preferred.
  • Understanding and knowledge integrating GESI and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights with WASH needs.
  • Knowledge of the government system’s functions and procedures at the provincial and local levels.
  • Familiar with updated government GESI and SRHR policies/ provisions and local government structure planning and budgeting process.
