“Pre-Feasibility Study for Identification and Prioritization of Potential Green Enterprises in Two Selected Local Governments of Karnali Province”

1. Background

Fair Trade Group Nepal (FTG Nepal) is a not-for-profit organization based in Lalitpur, established in 1996. It is a consortium of fair-trading organizations working to improve the socio-economic conditions of marginalized producers across Nepal. FTG Nepal currently has 33 member organizations located in Kathmandu, Janakpur, and Pokhara. The organization is registered with the District Administration Office (No. 646/053-54), affiliated with the Social Welfare Council (No. 7419), and registered with the Inland Revenue Office, Kathmandu.

FTG Nepal, in partnership with Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN) and Nepal Magar Society Service & Information Center (MIC Nepal) is implementing the project “Food and Nutrition Security and Resilient Livelihoods with Focus on Earthquake-Affected Families through Civil Society Strengthening (SUSTAIN)” with support from Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e.V.

The project aims to strengthen local food systems and improve livelihoods for communities in Jajarkot and West Rukum. One of its key objectives is to help youth and women develop skills and access support to start sustainable income generating activities, particularly green enterprises.

Green enterprises offer promising opportunities for rural communities. They help generate income while protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable local economies. Areas such as Aathbiskot Municipality (West Rukum) and Barekot Rural Municipality (Jajarkot) have strong potential for enterprises based on agriculture, forest resources, and non-timber forest products (NTFPs). However, limited market information, weak institutional linkages, and gaps in technical skills often prevent communities from turning these opportunities into viable businesses.

To better understand these opportunities, the project will conduct a pre-feasibility study to identify and prioritize potential green enterprises. The study will assess local resources, existing skills, market opportunities, and institutional support systems. It will also explore collaboration with Community Forest User Groups (CFUGs) and the Division Forest Office.

Special focus will be placed on opportunities that benefit youth and women and promote climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable enterprises.
