Position Title: Microbiologist

Duty Station: Kathmandu, Nepal

Estimated Starting Date: As soon as possible

Classification: Ungraded (UG)           

Type of Appointment: Special Short Term Ungraded Contract, 5 months with possibility of extension

General Function: 

Under the overall supervision of the Chief Migration Health Officer in Kathmandu, Nepal for administrative matters, and under direct supervision of Senior Lab Technician in Damak Nepal, the incumbent will be responsible for serving in IOM MHD Laboratory services at Kathmandu;

  1. Organize laboratory activities for efficient and optimal service delivery.
  2. Participate in planning and designing of new or upgrading existing facilities.
  3. Promote and monitor implementation of SOPs to comply with HAPs and other progammes’ standards.
  4. Ensure that the equipment and consumables are sufficient for the anticipated work. Participate in planning of procurement, delivery, installation, servicing and operation of all laboratory equipment and optimal expenditure of consumables.
  5. Organize record keeping and information management for timely delivery of results, data collection, analysis and reporting for laboratory monitoring and facilitation to operational research.
  6. Participate in development of long-term work plan for improvement of facilities and safety, process control, information management, staff development and customer service.
  7. Organise training for health care workers (HCW) in IOM for the updates of COVID-19 diagnostics and their merit/demerit and interpretation of results.
  8. Fully engage in improvement of Laboratory process for COVID-19 diagnosis and support in IOM’s COVID-19 response in the country.
  9. Strictly follow good microbiological practice in laboratory, train and implement the Infection, prevention and Control, IPC best practices
  10. Collect incident report in Laboratory and prepare report for future improvement.
  11. Perform such other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Clinical Microbiology/Medical Laboratory science from an accredited academic institution with three years of relevant laboratory experience preferably in a mycobacteriology laboratory or molecular laboratory; Or
  • Valid professional license issued from Nepal Health Professional Council.

Experience 

  • Experience in COVID-19 PCR Laboratory would be a distinct advantage.
  • Expertise and experience in developing SOP, guidelines for microbiology and molecular laboratory is a distinct advantage.
  • Working experience with international organizations.
  • Effectively applies and transfers relevant technical knowledge and practices to personnel and laboratory operations.
  • Computer literate with good understanding of data collection and analysis for monitoring and continuous improvement of laboratory services and performance.
  • Good knowledge of bio risk analysis and risk assessment in the laboratory.
  • Well experience in implementation of Laboratory quality management system in the molecular laboratory.
  • Experience in research and Laboratory staff training in COVID-19 diagnostics considered as an asset.
  • Experience in managing laboratory quality assurance programmes of COVID-19 Laboratory (Preferable).

Languages

Fluency in English, Nepali is required.
