VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Advocacy Forum-Nepal (AF), a non-profit and non-governmental human rights organization, is looking for dynamic and result-oriented individuals for the following positions based at its Central Office in Kathmandu and Madesh Province in Nepal. 

A. Human Rights Lawyer (1)

Under the supervision of the Director, the Human Rights Lawyer will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of AF’s project activities in upholding human rights and the rule of law in the respective province.

LOCATION: Madesh Province (Janakpur)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree (preferably in law and human rights) with a minimum of 2 years experience managing a human rights and rule of law project/areas (or Bachelor’s Degree, a minimum of 3 years relevant experience), 
  • Proficient knowledge of national and international law related to transitional justice, prevention of torture, and human rights,
  • Experience and a driven interest in research, report writing, and work on thematic issues,
  • Proficient knowledge and analytical skills on the current human rights and political context and emerging human rights and rule of law issues at Provincial levels,
  • Familiarity with liaison and coordination with government authorities, partner organizations, and stakeholders is an advantage,
  • Adept command of written and spoken English,
  • Aptitude in translating and editing legal documents (English to Nepali and vice versa)
  • Flexible working hours,
  • Proficient computer skills.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Regular visits to government detention facilities including Child Reform Homes, and Jail provide legal counseling to the detainees and provide legal assistance to needy people,
  • Interviewing and attending to victims and their family members, ensuring systematic documentation and archiving of cases of human rights violations and conducting necessary intervention,
  • Updating and managing the information on detainees and the cases of human rights violations,
  • Developing strategies for strategic litigation and campaigning on emblematic cases,
  • Drafting court cases and writ petitions and providing legal assistance to indigent victims,
  • Planning, and implementation of the project activities,
  • Assisting the AF team in project-related publication and research work,
  • Identifying and liaising with concerned stakeholders and other human rights organizations,
  • Providing logistical support during training, stakeholder meetings, and meetings of office programs,
  • Developing the content and modality of consultation/meetings with stakeholders,
  • Representing AF in the Province, 
  • Other tasks assigned by AF. 

Remuneration: Negotiable (based on relevant experience and qualification of the candidate).

B. MENTORSHIP PROGRAM-2 (PAID)

Based in: Kathmandu, the Head Office

What do we Offer?

  • One-on-one mentoring sessions with the mentor. The mentor will guide the mentee regarding monitoring, documentation, follow-up, and updates of past and ongoing cases of human rights violations. The Mentee will also get to work with a mentor on report writing, translation, research work, and project management.
  • Candidates will be trained on fact-finding techniques, case file management processes, and procedures to collect testimonies from survivors of human rights violations,
  • Opportunities for building relevant and meaningful networking and connections, 
  • Exposure to working experience with a team of highly skilled human rights lawyers,
  • Candidates will have the opportunity to participate in events and discussions about transitional justice and other human rights issues,
  • By the end of the program, the mentee will have developed a thorough understanding of transitional justice, impunity, and other human rights issues.

Who Can Apply?

  • Candidate must possess a Bachelor's Degree (Human Rights and Law, Social Sciences) or be in their Final Year and be based in Kathmandu, Nepal. 
  • Adept command over written and spoken English/Nepali language. 
  • Have an understanding and general knowledge of transitional justice, prevention of torture, and other human rights issues.
  • Is creative, open to learning, and has a clear idea of how these learnings will be used in their personal and professional career after the mentorship program.
