Blind Youth Association Nepal (BYAN) is a non-political, non-religious, not-for-profit Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established by blind and partially sighted (BPS) youth in Nepal. It was founded in 2011, registered with the District Administration Office in Kathmandu in 2012, and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council of Nepal. It is the only organization established by BPS youth in Nepal. Currently, BYAN has more than 500 members, organized into 10 district chapters located in Jhapa, Morang, Bara, Kathmandu, Chitwan, Kaski, Rupandehi, Banke, Surkhet, and Kailali districts. Memberships and chapter expansion are ongoing. As a rights-based organization, BYAN intends to play a proactive role in formulating, amending, and implementing legal provisions related to youths with disabilities. It also focuses on organizing and capacity-building of youths with disabilities across the country. BYAN has strong networking and cooperation with different government and non-government stakeholders working in various domains of disability. Additionally, BYAN is a member of the National Federation of the Disabled-Nepal (NFDN), which serves as the umbrella organization for organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) in the country.

Background

BYAN is currently implementing a project titled "Empowering adolescents and persons with disabilities on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE)" with the support of Amplify Change. The project will be implemented in the three districts- Kaski, Banke and Kailali. It aims to strengthen the capacity on CSE among persons with disabilities, bring policy level changes at the local level and increase the capacity of the three BYAN chapters. In order to achieve this goal, BYAN will be training young persons with disabilities (physical disability, hearing-related disability and vision-related disability) as CSE educators.  These educators will be organizing CSE sessions in schools and through community visits. Additionally, BYAN will actively participate in advocacy and lobbying initiatives with local government agencies. The primary objective is to seamlessly incorporate CSE at the policy level and into local curriculum. 

In response to this, BYAN has developed a five days training package to teach CSE contents specifically tailored for young people with a focus on (physical disability, hearing related disability and vision related disability). BYAN aims to train the CSE educators based on this training package and equip them with the knowledge and skills required to run CSE sessions at the school and in communities. The training will be conducted in Pokhara for five days from 23rd May to 27th May 2024.

In this context, BYAN announces the call for Expression of Interest (EOI) from experienced and qualified experts to conduct training of Trainers (TOT) in CSE for persons with disabilities. Responsibilities

The primary objective of this assignment is facilitate a five days training based on the developed training package that specifically focuses on training young persons with disabilities within the context of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE). The aim is to sensitize educators on CSE and equip them with the effective tools and strategies to impart CSE content and skills, ensuring that the trained individuals and young people with disabilities can make informed decisions about their sexuality, express their needs, and assert their rights.

The consultant is required to complete the following specific assignments:

  • Lead, plan, and implement a five-day training for people with diverse disabilities (physical disability, hearing related disability and vision related disability) based on the provided validated training package.
  • Develop required presentations or other materials required for facilitation of the training ensuring accessibility and inclusion.
  • Effectively deliver the contents of the manual using the suggested methods and resources.
  • Make the training interactive and participatory, review the progress of the participants and modify the methodology as per requirement.
  • Coordinate with the team of BYAN for required resources and support for the delivery of the training.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in Public Health, Disability, or other Social Sciences.
  • Willing to travel to Pokhara for the mentioned date.
  • Minimum three to five years of experience in the field of SRHR/CSE and disability, particularly experience in training young people with disabilities on CSE.
  • Good facilitation skill with abilities to interact and engage young people with youth friendly and accessible methodologies.
  • Having strong knowledge and understanding about diverse learning needs of adolescents and young people with disabilities.
  • Basic understanding about the methods of communication towards people with diverse disabilities.

Deliverables

  • Final training outline to conduct TOT and capacity-building training based on the manual provided by BYAN team.
  • Deliver five-day TOT on CSE/SRHR for 15 peer educators.
  • Training completion report

Service Duration and Location

The consultant will be working in close coordination with BYAN team. The consultant shall be engaged on a daily basis for 5 working days. The assignment will be started by 23rd May and completed by the end of 27th May 2024.
