Position Title: Energy Specialist
Full/Part Time: Full Time
Reports to: Project Manager
Location: Project office in Kathmandu with frequent field travel
Duration of Contract: Two years (extendable based on performance and project duration) (Probation period of six months)
Background
Powering Nepal’s Green Industrial Future (Power-GIF) is a Government of Norway–supported initiative aiming to utilize the projected growth in power generation to accelerate Nepal’s transition toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient, and industrialized economy. The initiative, aimed at promoting industrial electrification and clean energy adoption to advance green, resilient and inclusive development, is being implemented by Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal (CRT/N) led consortium in participation of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI), Center for Energy Studies (CES), and Ambidience Global Pvt. Ltd. (AmbGlo). With a combination of technical expertise, policy engagement, and strong private sector linkages, the project supports industrial decarbonization through policy support, technology demonstration, capacity building, digital innovations and access to innovative financing solutions.
To lead technical efforts in industrial electrification, energy efficiency, and renewable energy integration, supporting the design and implementation of low-carbon industrial solutions, CRT/N is seeking an Energy Specialist for the project.
Scope of Work
Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Energy Specialist will be responsible for:
- Leading overall technical planning and implementation of project activities related to industrial electrification, energy efficiency, and renewable energy.
- Providing strategic direction for industrial energy transition, including development of roadmaps, fuel-switching strategies, and decarbonization pathways.
- Leading and ensuring quality baseline assessments, energy audits, and techno-economic analyses across targeted industries.
- Leading identification, evaluation, and deployment of clean energy and energy-efficient technologies, including lighthouse projects implementation.
- Leading design and supervision of pilot projects, ensuring performance monitoring, learning, and scalability of solutions.
- Providing technical leadership in integrating digitalization and smart energy solutions within industrial processes.
- Supporting in drafting evidence-based policy, including policy analysis, gap assessments, and formulation of recommendations for green industrial development.
- Providing technical input to the project team to strengthen engagement with industries, NEA, and private sector to promote adoption of clean energy solutions.
- Overseeing and supporting the capacity-building initiatives, including development of training materials and delivery of technical training on RE & EE including energy management systems and energy audits at the industries.
- Ensuring technical rigor in project outputs, including reports, knowledge products, and documentation of best practices.
- Providing technical guidance to project team members and coordinate with other relevant stakeholders for effective implementation
- Ensuring integration of GESI and sustainability principles in all technical interventions coordinating with GEDSI experts.
- Performing other duties as required in line with project needs.
Workstation
The Energy Specialist will be based in a project office in Kathmandu with frequent field travel.
Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills
- Master's degree in engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, Energy, Technology or related field).
- Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and/or industrial energy systems (preferably in a technical lead role).
- Proven experience in industrial energy audits, energy management systems, and implementation of energy efficiency and fuel-switching interventions.
- Strong knowledge of clean energy technologies (e.g., electrification of thermal processes, heat pumps, solar thermal/PV, energy storage, etc.) and their techno-economic evaluation.
- Experience in development agency supported projects targeted for clean energy transition in industrial sectors is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and/or managing pilot or demonstration projects in RE & EE.
- Familiarity with industrial decarbonization strategies, climate policies, and Nepal’s energy sector (including GRID strategy and NDCs).
- Experience in stakeholder coordination with industries, utilities, government agencies, and financial institutions.
- Experience in capacity building, training delivery, and development of technical guidelines or knowledge products.
- Understanding digitalization in energy systems (e.g., energy monitoring, automation, smart systems) will be an added advantage.
- Strong analytical, report writing, and communication skills in English and Nepali.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and manage complex tasks in a multi-stakeholder project environment.
- Knowledge of Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) principles in energy projects is highly desirable.
Working Hours
- Working hours will align with project’s normal office schedule (Monday to Friday)
Remuneration
