CALL FOR LITIGATION OFFICER

Advocacy Forum-Nepal (AF), a non-profit and non-governmental human rights organization, is looking for a dynamic and result-oriented Litigation Officer (1) for the following position based in Kathmandu, Nepal. 

Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Litigation Officer will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of AF’s work in upholding human rights and the rule of law.

LOCATION: Kathmandu

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3 years or Master's Degree with a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in human rights, rule of law, and litigation work,
  • Proficient knowledge of national and international law related to juvenile justice, prevention of torture, and human rights,
  • Proficient knowledge and analytical skills on the current human rights and political context and emerging human rights and rule of law issues,
  • Familiarity with liaison and coordination with government authorities, partner organizations, and stakeholders is an advantage.
  • Adept command of written and spoken English and Nepali,
  • Aptitude in translating and editing legal documents (English to Nepali and vice versa),
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Excel,
  • Hold a valid two-wheeler driving license.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Regular visits to government detention facilities, including police detention centers, Child Reform Homes,
  • Provide legal counseling to the detainees and provide legal assistance to needy people,
  • Interviewing and attending to victims and their family members, ensuring systematic documentation and archiving of cases of torture, and other human rights violations, and conducting necessary intervention,
  • Updating and managing the information on detainees and the cases of human rights violations, 
  • Drafting court cases and writ petitions, and other legal documents, and representing victims before courts and other quasi-judicial bodies when required, while providing legal assistance to indigent victims,
  • Preparing periodic case updates and monthly summaries of legal aid and litigation cases handled,
  • Preparing field visit reports and documentation following detention monitoring visits and other field activities,
  • Maintain comprehensive case dossiers, including petitions, evidence, and supporting documents, ensuring proper record management and preservation of evidence while maintaining the chain of custody.

CALL FOR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Advocacy Forum-Nepal (AF), a non-profit and non-governmental human rights organization, is looking for dynamic and result-oriented individuals for its mentorship program. Under the supervision of experienced experts, selected mentees will gain hands-on experience in defending human rights, documentation, advocacy, and campaigning.

Location: Kathmandu, Head Office

Benefits and Remuneration: Mentee will receive a monthly stipend of 25,000 NPR to cover meals, transportation, and communication expenses.

Duration: 9 months (April- December 2026).

What do we offer?

  • One-on-one mentoring sessions: The mentor will guide the mentee regarding monitoring, documentation, follow-up, and updates of past and ongoing cases of human rights violations.
  • Practical Work Experience: The mentee will get a chance to work with a mentor on report writing, translation, research work, and project management.
  • Specialized Training: Candidates will be trained on fact-finding techniques, case file management processes, and procedures to collect testimonies from conflict survivors and survivors of human rights violations.
  • Networking: Opportunities for building relevant and meaningful networking.
  • Professional Exposure: Exposure to working experience with a team of highly skilled human rights lawyers.
  • Comprehensive Learning: By the end of the program, the mentee will have developed a thorough understanding of transitional justice, impunity, and other human rights issues.

Who Can Apply?

  • Education: Candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree (Human Rights and Law, Social Sciences) or be in their Final Year and be based in Kathmandu, Nepal.
  • Language Skills: Adept command over the written and spoken English/Nepali language.
  • Knowledge Base: Have an understanding and general knowledge of transitional justice, prevention of torture, and other human rights issues.
  • Mindset: Is creative, open to learning, and has a clear idea of how these learnings will be used in their personal and professional career after the mentorship program.
