Akasha Academy is currently looking for an Agriculture Officer Trainee at the Headquarters site in Suntakhan, Gokarneshwor Municipality. This is a unique possibility to practically learn the principles of organic, regenerative agriculture together with a highly committed and experienced team, support the establishment of a model farm just outside Kathmandu and contribute to offer trainings to the local communities around.

The establishment of Akasha Academy in Nepal follows the vision of Tulku Khyungdor Rinpoche to offer a place for integrated education, rooted in the universal wisdom of original Buddhism. On that foundation, the main areas of work include education, health and environmental protection. A special focus is set on the empowerment of girls and women.

The Akasha Academy NGO is a non-governmental, non-profit organization registered in Nepal. The NGO's constitutional goal is to contribute to a positive and sustainable development through environmental protection, health promotion, education, and respect for human rights. The Akasha Academy NGO has been successfully carrying out projects since its foundation in 2012.

Akasha Environment

The Headquarters of Akasha Academy is located at the border of Shivapuri National Park in Suntakhan, Gokarneshwor Municipality. It is envisioned to serve as a flagship project for sustainable land use, planning, architecture, and infrastructure. The vision of Akasha Academy also includes ecosystems restoration, reforestation, enhancing the local biodiversity, sustainable land use and regenerative, organic farming principles as well as training for the local community in these fields. Akasha Academy also supports local food systems and runs a model farm for regenerative, organic agriculture in Suntakhan, offering healthy locally grown food as well as training for the local community in these fields.

Akasha Education

In view of the current global and local developments, it has become increasingly clear that there is a need to support especially the younger generation in being able to meet today's challenges.

This is how the vision of Akasha Academy as a place for integrated education in the fields of health and environment came into being. The aim of Akasha Education is to create conditions for young people from diverse backgrounds to find their path in life and give them the necessary tools to face the current challenges globally and locally. Akasha Education programs in Nepal currently consist of different workshops and the Akasha Traineeship, a vocational training for women.

Additionally, Akasha Academy has recently started Akasha Care – a program to support health awareness and create a safe space for women.

 

Role of the position

The role of the Agriculture Officer – Trainee will be to learn, apply and document the organic, regenerative agricultural practices following the bio-intensive approach at Akasha Academy. In doing so, a focus will be to support the establishment of Akasha Model Farm in terms of monitoring and documentation. Furthermore, the position will include the contribution to the Akasha Education programs in form of content preparation and interactive teaching itself. For the position, regular presence at the training center in Suntakhan-3, Gokarneshwor will be required.

 

Tasks and responsibilities:

-          Learning and documenting the biointensive approach practiced at Akasha Academy

-          Developing a monitoring system for the farm (including crop calendar, documentation of plantation and harvest)

-          Monitoring the harvest and sales documentation

-          support to design and implement agriculture and environment related education projects for school children and community people (ecosystem restoration, climate change adaptation, regenerative farming, etc.)

-          supporting the preparation and write up of social media posts, blog articles

-          representing Akasha Academy in networks, thematic forums, events

-          other tasks as per necessity and upon mutual agreement

 

Contract period

Initially 6 months, with the possibility of extension and promotion to Agriculture officer;

 

Required skills and experience:

-          Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in relevant discipline,

-          Practical experience in organic agriculture principles, or willingness to learn

-          excellent communication and presentation skills,

-          be courageous, curios and innovative

-          solid command of Nepali and English languages, both written and verbal,

-          the ability to work within a team of different social and cultural backgrounds,

-          reliability and loyalty,

-          the aspiration to contribute to a positive change in local communities and beyond,

-          a strong identification and commitment towards the overall project aim and the work of Akasha Academy NGO,

-          solid command of MS Office package (especially Powerpoint, Word, Excel)

-          sound knowledge and experience in social media posting

-          willingness to work in Suntakhan, Gokarneshwor on daily basis, or relocate

-          driver’s license (Two wheeler)
