Project Officer – Psychosocial Support, Kathmandu Nepal

DanChurchAid (DCA) is a faith-based, non-missionary organization. We work for the poor, vulnerable and socially excluded communities and believe in life before death. Our everyday work with development and relief aid strives to help the oppressed, neglected and marginalized groups in our focus countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America to strengthen their possibilities of a life in dignity. 

In Nepal, Bangladesh and India, we are involved in several thematic areas with our work focusing on resilient livelihood, active citizenship and migrants’ rights, among others.

On 25 April 2015 (11:56, UTC+5:45), a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal with the epicenter located 81 km northwest of the capital city of Kathmandu. The earthquake severely impacted 13 out of the 75 districts in the country, left 6,204 people dead and destroyed 138,182 houses as of 1 May 2015. Hundreds of aftershocks have been reported including a 6.7 magnitude earthquake. On 2 May 2015, the Government confirmed that 6,659 people have died. Overall, the most acute needs are in rural communities, which are dispersed and difficult to reach. 

In response DCA and NCA have formed a joint operation using DCA’s registration and prior presence in the country. This operation is coordinating with the ACT Alliance, and is active in the sectors of WASH, shelter, food, early recovery (cash transfer programming), with a mainstreamed psychosocial component, in: 

  • 3 VDCs in Dhading district (Khari 1051 HHs, Nalang 1,876 HHsSalang 1,040)
  • 6 wards in Ghorka district 
  • Approximately villages in the municipalities of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur.

Currently we are scaling up our operations, running assessments and developing project proposals, and have been delivering food, non-food items (blankets, mats, tarps, ropes). The DCA program had no active partnerships in the affected districts, and no emergency relief partners, so new partners have been identified in some cases, whereas in others non-relief partners are being supported. The DCA-NCA team is participating actively in the WASH cluster, the Food Security cluster, the Cash Coordination Group, and the Protection cluster.  

This position will be part of the Emergency Response Team and will be responsible for the coordination of the community based psychosocial support activities within DCA Earthquake response on shelter, WASH and food security in DCA working district. 

Applicants for the job should have a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or related field, with at least one year of working experience in Psychology field.

The Emergency Response Team needs a person with excellent interpersonal communication skills and a good sense of humour. Willingness and ability to travel extensively across the region and be flexible is essential. 

The position will be located in Kathmandu, Nepal and shall be paid under local national terms and conditions in accordance with existing salary scales and benefits.
