For
Conducting Agroecosystem Assessment of the Agroecological Villages (AEVs) in Climate Resilient Agriculture (CRA Phase 3) Project Areas
Nepal’s agricultural sector has experienced increasing challenges due to resource depletion, environmental degradation, and vulnerability to climate change (Paudel et al., 2014). Agroecology offers a sustainable alternative by integrating ecological and social principles into agricultural and food systems (Koopmans & Snapp, 2016). Agroecological systems promote greater carbon sequestration, are more resilient to climate shocks, and provide climate change mitigation and adaptation solutions. These conditions are achieved through improved soil health, biodiversity, and high diversification of species and genetic resources that are locally available within the agricultural production system (Leippert et al., 2020).
To operationalize agroecology in Nepal, Local Initiatives for Biodiversity, Research and Development LI-BIRD is implementing “Scaling up climate resilient agriculture for sustainable livelihood of smallholder farmers in Nepal” (CRA) project with financial support from Bread for the World (BftW) Germany and DKA Austria in Kaski, Sindhupalchowk, and Syangja districts of Nepal since 2019. Currently, the project is running in its third phase from October 2024 till September 2027 in Sindupalchowk, Kaski, and Synagja districts. The project promotes agroecology through its Agroecological Village (AEV) model approach, which refers to geographically defined communities where integrated agroecological practices are adopted at the landscape level. Such AEVs are characterized by diverse agroecological zones, farming practices, and availability of natural resources. The model AEVs are one of the most important assignments of the CRA-III project. Thereafter, this study is designed to assess such AEVs to document and analyze the natural and managed ecosystems, including their components, services, vulnerabilities, and interactions, to support evidence-based planning and monitoring of the project.
Hence, LI-BIRD invites all eligible consultants/firms to submit the sealed proposal for undertaking the assignment. Please use the form/template provided in the EoI document while preparing your proposal.
