Job Description: Legal Adviser for Asia (Regional Office) The Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) is a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to promoting women's equality worldwide by guaranteeing reproductive rights as human rights. Reproductive rights, the foundation for women's self-determination over their bodies and sexual lives, are critical to all women's ability to achieve their full potential. We believe laws and policies that protect and advance these rights are essential. They must allow women the freedom to decide whether and when to have children. They must respect women's ability to exercise their reproductive choices without coercion. They must also secure women's access to basic health services, including contraception, abortion, education and safe pregnancy care. Ultimately, reproductive rights are imperative to ensuring justice for all members of society -- women, children, and their families. Responsibilities: The Legal Adviser will work under the supervision of the Asia Regional Manager and closely with other program staff to support and build the work of the Regional Program and establish the new regional office. Seventy percent of the Legal Adviser’s work will be focused on supporting the Center’s: 1. Research and Legal and Advocacy submissions, including conducting general legal and policy research on reproductive rights in the region and identifying and analyzing key trends, monitoring compliance with international obligations relating to reproductive rights and jurisprudential developments, contributing to formal submissions for UN human rights bodies and drafting submissions for national and regional human rights bodies 2. Litigation, including developing the factual record and pleadings, writing legal memoranda, amicus curiae, and case briefs on comparative and international human rights law; and 3. Advocacy Materials, including contributing to the development of Center reports, and materials that support new and ongoing litigation and other legal strategies. Thirty percent of the Legal Adviser’s work will be focused on supporting the Regional Office’s: 1.Administration , including carrying out administrative and organizational tasks relating directly to projects, editing and fact checking memoranda and reports assisting with responses to inquiries and maintaining relationships with NGO partners both local and regional, liaising with the New York office, organizing and managing the logistics of program-related events and meetings; helping coordinate the production of regional publications; supporting the preparation of monthly reports/updates and progress reports on projects for the New York office and the Government of Nepal; providing input on budgets and program plans; and supervising interns and 2.External Relation Initiatives , including helping coordinate pro bono work with law firms and research projects with law schools to leverage the Center’s work; supporting fundraising efforts; and representing the Center at meetings, Some regional travel will be required . Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with experience and comprehensive benefits. Qualifications: • The candidate must be licensed to practice law in Nepal. • The candidate should have knowledge of international human rights and women’s rights. • Knowledge of reproductive rights or women’s health would be helpful. The candidate should be capable of complex legal analytical work, must possess excellent writing, editing, research and oral advocacy skills and be self-motivated. • The candidate must have at least 3 years of legal experience outside of law school. • Fluency in English and Nepali is required.
