Terms of Reference to Produce a Documentary
- Background
World Child Cancer has been implementing a project named “Improving paediatric oncology outcomes in Nepal” in collaboration with Ramesh Gupta Memorial Trust, Together Against Childhood Cancer, and Kanti Children’s Hospital in Nepal, financed by the UK government. The project’s main objectives are to improve the survival rates for children with cancer, increase public and professional awareness of childhood cancer, the establishment of Shared Care Centres (SCC), provide specialized training to health personnel, and provide support for patients and families.
Nepal's economy has been underperforming for several years due to an unstable government, poor infrastructure, and specialized manpower. Unlike other South Asian countries, Nepal’s GDP is around $1200 which is significantly lower. Due to its poor health structure, and the priority of the government, tentatively 1,500 Nepali children suffer from cancer per annum. Moreover, about 40% of children get access to specialist treatment centres, while others fail to reach those centres due to geographical distance or avoid treatment at all due to the unaffordability of the treatment expenses. These factors normally lead to an increase in child mortality, which could have been easily avoided.
To improve the paediatric outcomes in Nepal, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the UK financed World Child Cancer in late 2020. Under the project, i) healthcare professionals received various trainings, ii) families received financial support as well as counseling, iii) Awareness among common people regarding childhood cancer has been raised, and iv) Two Shared Care Centres have been established in Koshi and Gandaki Province.
