South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE) is a regional network that operates through its secretariat in Kathmandu and member institutions from five South Asian countries, namely Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The overall objective of SAWTEE is to build the capacity of concerned stakeholders in South Asia in the context of liberalization and globalization. Policy research and dissemination, capacity building, and policy advocacy are SAWTEE’s major strengths.

Economist (Environmental Economics) and Economist (Trade)

South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE) is a regional network that operates through its secretariat in Kathmandu and member institutions from five South Asian countries, namely Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. SAWTEE engages in policy research and dissemination, capacity building, and policy advocacy on trade and economic development issues.

SAWTEE is looking for a Nepali citizen for the positions of  Economist (Environmental Economics) and Economist (Trade) at its office in Kathmandu.

1. Position:  Economist (Environmental Economics)

No. of Position: 1

Job description

  • Independently and significantly contribute to different stages of research (data collection and analysis, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, report writing).
  • Provide support to the organization in the implementation of existing projects and programmes.
  • Undertake research and programme-related works as assigned.
  • Prepare concept notes and proposals, and edit.
  • Assist in organizing workshops, seminars and meetings.
  • Prepare summaries and reports of projects and different activities of the organization.
  • Contribute to the organization’s workshops, seminars and meetings by preparing concept notes, making presentations, moderating events, etc.

Required skills

  • Having taken a course on environmental economics in graduate studies.
  • Strong research and analytical skills in doing both qualitative and quantitative research, and ability to grasp new economic, trade and development issues quickly through self-study.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of green growth and/or climate change issues
  • Demonstrable ability to undertake research on topics in environmental economics independently.
  • Ability to quickly learn emerging issues/topics in environmental economics issues, including climate change.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with data sources on environmental economics, including climate change issues. 
  • Demonstrable ability to do research using datasets from firm survey, household survey and/or labour-force survey will be an advantage.
  • Strong command over Nepali and English languages (both writing and speaking).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Qualification and experience

  • Masters in Economics (with a course on environmental economics in graduate studies).
  • Prior relevant work experience of at least two years in research is an advantage.

2. Position: Economist (Trade)

Job description

  • Prepare concept notes and proposals, and edit.
  • Assist in organizing workshops, seminars and meetings.
  • Prepare summaries and reports of projects and different activities of the organization.
  • Participate in workshops, seminars and meetings and make presentations as necessary.

Required skills

  • Strong research and analytical skills in doing both qualitative and quantitative research, and ability to grasp new economic, trade and development issues quickly through self-study.
  • Demonstrable ability to undertake research on international trade-related issues independently.
  • Ability to quickly learn emerging issues/topics in international trade.
  • Demonstrable ability to do research using datasets from firm survey, household survey and/or labour-force survey.
  • Demonstrable ability to write research proposals and papers using at least one of the above-mentioned datasets and employing econometric techniques.
  • Strong command over Nepali and English languages (both writing and speaking).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Qualification and experience

  • Masters in Economics, including courses on applied econometrics.
  • Having taken a course on international trade in graduate studies, and/or possessing demonstrable knowledge of topics in international trade (e.g., evidence of research experience).
  • Ability to proactively work with a diverse team and often under tight deadlines.
  • Prior relevant work experience of at least two years in research is an advantage.
