Mechanical Transport (MT) department British Gurkhas Nepal (BGN) is a very busy dept supporting all the transport requirements of the Unit in Kathmandu in support of BGN outputs and missions in Nepal.   BGN MT Drivers need to be highly skilled, focused, and agile to perform their duties up to the British standards in line with the demanding schedules of the dept, with perfection and high calibre.

This position is advertised at 40 hours per week.

Job description:

  • Driving is to be done only when it is authorised to do so, and he must comply with Road Transport Movement Regulation - JSP 800 Vol 5 (MoD Regulation). He/She is to keep the record of his daily Driving Hours and not to exceed maximum daily driving and working hours in no circumstances.
  • Understand how to carry out Vehicle Fault reporting procedure in BGN MT (British Gurkhas Nepal Mechanical Transport).
  • Carry out routine first parade, service and maintenance of vehicle as directed by Assistant Mechanical Transport Officer (AMTO)/ Workshop (WKSP).
  • Keeping security of the vehicle both inside and outside the camp.
  • He/she is to be familiar with the Speed Limits, Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) /Breakdown procedure.
  • Deliver water and fuel in Service Family Accommodation (SFA) routinely.
  • Account and maintain all Complete Equipment Store (CES) item in accordance with CES list.
  • He/She is to ensure the roadworthiness of the vehicle prior to start the journey and must clean and refuel the vehicle on completion of the task.

What you will be doing:

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for cleanliness of the vehicle – preparing it for formal inspection as directed by AMTO/MT Sgt/MT Detail Clerk.
  • Responsible for the possession of driver and vehicle documents i.e. driving license/ Form Mechanical Transport (FMT 600, F/MT 1001 Authority to use document (ATUD) and vehicle document.
  • He/She is to be familiar to drive heavy vehicle including People Caring Vehicle (PCV) and take responsibilities of load and passengers.
  • He/She is to ensure the safety of the passengers and the vehicle while parking outside of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) premises.
  • He/She is responsible to ensure the use of seatbelts and child restraints.
  • He/She is responsible to fix all Level 1 jobs where possible and report to Detail Clerk/MT Sgt/ AMTO/ Vehicle Mechanic (VM) if the vehicle is non-task worthy.
  • Responsible for end of month vehicle close down procedure (i.e. close work tickets, refueling vehicles) and return the W/Ticket to detail clerk.

You must have:

  • Communication Skills (English Language- Writing and speaking)
  • Driving license category, A, B, F, G
  • General knowledge of Drivers’ Hours regulation and other MT related documents (ATUD, FMT 600 and Transport request forms)
  • Basic knowledge of LV1, LV2 jobs, Fault reporting procedure and transport booking procedure), knowledge of FMT 1000 series, 1084A and FMT 1005 and understanding of MT/ BGN organization.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanical system, Road Traffic Accident (RTA)/ road Traffic Incident (RTI) procedure, navigation skills and General knowledge of oil and lubrication.
  • Knowledge on Complete Equipment Schedule and safe and correct use of these equipment, Basic knowledge of servicing and maintenance check of the vehicle and Knowledge of BGNSI 4.04 Mechanical Transport Standing Order (MTSO)
  • Proven Driving experience and training is essential for this role to deliver the job responsibility effectively and efficiently with good sense of customer service and good English language skills. 3 years' experience with SLC/SEE education is essential.

Security:

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is a Govt of Nepal Police Report for employment in Nepal.

Selection process:

The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in understanding their duties and be familiar with all relevant Health and Safety awareness. They will also have knowledge of equipment care. Should have communication skills in both English and Nepali, navigation skill, and a good sense of road safety awareness. Be physically fit and capable to undertake arduous work. Candidates must hold the driving license category A, B, F, G and ensure their experience and qualifications meet above written requirements.

Candidates meeting the standard and job requirement will only be sifted for Written and Practical Test, followed by interview selection on MERIT basis.
