Position title: Dairy Technician (National Volunteer)

Organization and brief description:

CECI seeks to improve the social and economic well-being of the poorest, most disadvantaged people in communities in Africa, Asia and the Americas and volunteers are at the core of this work. Ensuring women and young women are empowered and fully play their role as agents of change for a sustainable, inclusive development is central to CECI's work. CECI volunteers work towards women and young women's economic empowerment and the climate change resilience of communities by sharing their skills and expertise and working hand in hand with local partners.

Partner: Central Dairy Cooperative Association Nepal (CDCAN) has 859 primary cooperatives including 36 district unions from 64 districts astheir members covering 500,000 families. Its main objectives: Make the country self-sufficient in quality milk and milk products; manage marketing of produced milkproducts by training member cooperatives in quality milk production, distribution andoperating milk-processing industries; arrange to improve variety of livestock breedand provide veterinary services to member cooperatives.

Length of posting: 4 months

Principal responsibilities: 

  • Suggest ways to the Board of directors (BOD) on how to approach the milk industry’s technical barriers;
  • Provide technical material around best practices in milk quality.
  • Provide advice to the BOD and staffs on who to improve milk quality.
  • Suggest strategies on how to improve the collaboration between farmers, milk cooperatives,suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Train managers   on the maintenance of chilling vats.
  • Facilitate workshops and train staff on product diversification and quality control.
  • Integrate gender equality in all activities with emphasis on the participation and representation of women and young women.
  • Integrate environmental issues and climate change adaptation in all activities.
  • Commit to collaborate to write an article, in an activity or in an event that raises awareness among the Canadian public.
  • Make sure to respect, at all times, the organisation's guides, manuals, guidelines or instructions related to security and safety.
  • Write the reports required by the partner organization and the CECI program

Qualifications :

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Food and Technology or a related field.
  • At least one year of experience as a dairy technician.
  • Good facilitation and training skills.
  • Excellent communication and consultancy skill.
  • Ability to work with different member organizations.

Working conditions:

The volunteer will be based in CDCAN office Baneshwor, Kathmandu with frequent field visit to all over the country, Nepal. As per the need and request of the member cooperatives.
