KURVE Wustrow

KURVE Wustrow is an INGO based in Germany with an office in Nepal, and conducts trainings, workshops and events in the field of civil, nonviolent conflict transformation at home and abroad. In the context of the Civil Peace Service program (CPS) funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the INGO is closely cooperating with partner organizations in the Balkans, Ukraine, Sudan, the Middle East, and in South and Southeast Asia. Since 2009 KURVE Wustrow is supporting partner organizations in Nepal.

The Centre for Training and Networking in Nonviolent Action – KURVE Wustrow was founded in 1980 in Germany with the aim of turning concerns about violent conflicts, environmental degradation and social injustice into conscious nonviolent action. KURVE Wustrow conducts trainings, workshops and events in the field of civil, nonviolent conflict transformation at home and abroad. In the context of the “Civil Peace Service” (CPS), the INGO is closely cooperating with partner organisations in the Balkans, Ukraine, Sudan, the Middle East, and in South and Southeast Asia. The work of international professionals in the partner organisations is an integral part of this cooperation. Further focal points of KURVE Wustrow include the commitment to climate and resource protection and against nuclear energy.

Overview

As part of the country project management team in Nepal, the Country Program Coordinator together with an International Country Coordinator will be responsible for counseling and advising the partner organisations of KURVE Wustrow in Nepal in achieving high-quality project implementation, monitoring and reporting as well as proper utilization of project funds, and for ensuring compliance with the rules and regulatory requirements of the Government of Nepal, KURVE Wustrow and donors. S/he will participate in the strategic development of the CPS program.

Responsibilities

·    Ensure coordination with and fulfillment of the requirements of the Social Welfare Council in Nepal, and the responsible ministries (e.g. reporting to SWC, coordination of evaluations by the SWC, preparation, submission and follow-up of applications for modifications during a project period and project proposals for new projects, extension of the General Agreement, reporting to the Ministry of Finance on the AMIS platform)

·    Follow up on compliance with the legal framework for INGO operations in Nepal such as auditing of the organisation, projects and programs in time, renewal with AIN, annual tax renewal, office registration renewal

·     Cooperate with technical and personal support for international staff of KURVE Wustrow in Nepal, including support of the work visa application and renewal process

·     Contribute to the further strategy development and outcome-oriented planning, monitoring and evaluation of CPS projects and activities based on profound analysis, including the development of new project ideas and the identification of new partner organisations in future

·   Coordinate with partner organisations to oversee the design and implementation of the monitoring system, using appropriate tools and procedures for collection and analysis of information as basis for reflecting change processes and measuring outcomes

·   Ensure the proper use of project funds in regular communication with the KURVE Wustrow main office; including monitoring and compliance with financial regulations

·     Organise and facilitate technical and coordination meetings of the project teams including counselling and collegial inter-vision as well as conducting planning and monitoring workshops with partner organizations and international staff

·     Organise trainings for project teams in civil non-violent conflict transformation and high-quality project implementation 

·   Coordinate for the development of periodic (i.e. quarterly and annual) reports as well as human-interest stories, fact sheets, technical briefs and abstracts related to project interventions

·     Representation of KURVE Wustrow in Nepal towards local authorities like Social Welfare Council or respective Ministries, as well as participation in local coordination bodies, also with AIN and other relevant organisations

·   Regular communication and coordination with the international coordinator, the local project teams and the office in Wustrow (Germany)

·    Conducting conflict and security analysis and contributing to the development of security guidelines and other background documentation and regulations relevant to the country context

·    Potentially participate in development of a transregional component with partner organisations in Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

The tasks will be shared between the local and international country coordinator and focus areas of each position might be agreed upon.

Required Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience

·     Relevant university degree (e.g. peace and conflict studies, social sciences or business administration)

·     Longstanding expertise in project management, budget coordination and financial management, especially in regard to processes and regulations of the SWC and Ministries in Nepal and in the context of project funding by public international donors

·    Commitment to positive peace; relevant trainings, sound knowledge and preferably experience in the field of civil non-violent conflict transformation and human rights as well as experience with and/or proximity to non-violent social movements

·   Training as a peace expert, as a trainer for conflict transformation, or mediator would be advantageous, as well as experience in facilitation, training, team building and process support

·   Several years of practical experience in working with NGOs, preferably in intercultural teams; knowledge of specific challenges of organisational development processes

·    Own life experience with living conditions in highly marginalized communities (for example through longer exposures or on-site studies)

·     Nepali citizenship and longstanding familiarity with structures and the situation in Nepal

·     Willingness to travel, also to remote areas in Nepal, and occasionally for meetings to Germany

·     A respectful, interculturally sensitive attitude as well as the ability to self-reflect

·    Ability to work effectively with diverse intercultural teams, experience in personnel management and willingness to learn and empower others

·     Ability to work in a changing environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure to perform

·     Excellent command of English, excellent writing and communications skills, including demonstrated technical writing skills
