Background information/context

Save the children has launched Litle Steps, Bright Futures: Catalyzing Support for Child Development in Karnali Province" in Chamundabindrasaini municipality of Dailekh district of Karnali province. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to institutionalization of the Child Grant Plus integrated child development package driving holistic development of under 5 children in Nepal. The Child Grant Plus program of Save the Children builds on Nepal’s national Child Grant scheme, which provides cash transfers to caregivers of young children to improve their nutrition, health, and overall well-being. The Plus component enhances this by integrating additional services such as parental support, early childhood stimulation, and linkages to essential health and nutrition services. It takes a holistic approach by combining financial assistance with interventions that strengthen caregiving practices, making it more effective in improving child development outcomes.

Objective

The overall objective of this consultancy is to review the existing guidelines and manuals developed under SCI's CSSP and Early Start projects, with a particular focus on the curriculum for nutrition sessions. Based on this review, the consultant will prepare a nutrition training manual that consists of a maximum of six sessions to be used to deliver at community level to mothers/prime caregivers of children 0-59 months. 

Scope of work

  • Review the manuals developed under SCI’s Early Start, CSSP and other projects.
  • Design nutrition sessions for children under five using references from both manuals.
  • Develop sessions according to the protocol of Nepal government, family health division if there is any difference seen in the existing guidelines.
  • Develop a maximum of 6 weekly sessions (2 hours each) for parents and caregivers of children under five.
  • Submit a draft a manual to the SCI project focal person for review, feedback, and comments.
  • Incorporating the feedback, prepare the final version of the manual and provide it to the relevant SCI team members.
  • Maintain close communication with the SCI project focal person.
  • Participate in an orientation on the assignment by SCI before beginning the manual development work, to ensure a clear understanding of the objectives.
  • Provide one time training to the facilitators of the project and the venue will be decided by the implementing partner of the project.
  • The manual should have relevant pictures to make it easier to facilitate at community level.
  • The manual should be in English and Nepali language both.

Location and official travel involved

Field travel is required while providing training to the facilitators, however, the consultant mostly requires doing the desk work-  i.e, to review and design the guidelines.

Qualification and skill set required

The consultant should have a minimum of the following qualifications and competence for this assignment:

  • Demonstrated experience in manual development specifically nutrition related to children under 5 years.
  • Strong written skills in English and Nepali. Because once the manual final in English it should be translate in Nepali language also.
  • Minimum qualification: master's degree required in health and nutrition and any other related disciplines.

Status updates/reporting

Consult will follow the above timeline and submit the assignments accordingly. In case of any changes, consultant should inform SCI at least one week prior to the plan.

Acceptance:

The consultant must adhere strictly to the project deliverables and timeline. She/he is responsible for ensuring that the assignment is completed on time. Save the Children’s team reviews and approves the manual based on the quality of the deliverables. SC can stop the agreement at any time if the deliverables are found not satisfied. Therefore, the first initial draft of the manual and its quality will decide whether to continue with the consultancy or not.

General assumptions and dependencies 

  1. The project team from Save the Children will give feedback in a timely manner.
  2. Timely completion of the assignments with quality.
  3. The training manual and its contents align what the project is required.

Payment information  

The consultant will be paid for in two installments:

  1. 40% will be paid after submission of 1st draft of manual.
  2. The second installment of 60% will be paid after submission of final draft of manual and completion of two days training to facilitator.

Payments will only occur once a valid invoice and / or payment request is received. Additionally, payments will be made after deducting the applicable taxes as per the prevailing tax rules of the Nepal Government.
