The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has exciting opportunity for Young Researcher (2 positions) to conduct an ethnographic research for it’s “A gender perspective to understand and enhance the functionality of water supply systems: Lessons from Nepal (GP4WSF)” DFAT funded project implemented in Dailekh and Sarlahi districts. This project has been examining two main research objectives: i) How do gender relationships affect collective action in the WASH Sector in Nepal? and ii) To what extent does targeted gender-programming affect the outcomes of WASH interventions in Nepal? We, therefore, invite young researchers to conduct qualitative research using ethnographic inquiries that will contribute towards the investigation of these two key research topics in the federal context of Nepal.

The research includes detailed observation and examination of the study subjects amid the interplay of social norms, behaviors and practices, policies, and institutional arrangements, planning, and decision-making on water access, conservation, management, use, and sanitation and hygiene in the federal context, should be carried out with a focus on gender dynamics and how gendered power relations affect the sustainability and functionality of water systems.

IWMI offers young researchers the opportunity to follow ethnographic inquiries for the project, whereby the young researchers will enhance their qualitative research capacity and produce publishable material. The young researchers are expected to live in selected communities for at least one month’s period to collect data following ethnographic research methods and may also need to gather policies and plans related data in provincial and federal level with the guidance of IWMI researchers.

We seek a young researcher or a graduate student in sociology, anthropology or related discipline, ideally with dissertation/thesis interested in community water resource management, gender issues, or water rights. Doctoral degree students with all but dissertation (ABD) status are particularly encouraged to apply. Familiarity with qualitative research methods required, prior experience will be an asset.

The selected candidates will be given a four months (short-term) assignment for which the candidates will complete following deliverables and report to the Principal Investigator of the Project.

  • Submission of detailed research concept note and work plan
  • Preparation of checklists or research guide for data collection in the field
  • Field work for data collection
