Details / requirements:

RTI International is seeking “Driver” candidates for the USAID’s Health for Life (H4L) for the expansion to 10 earthquake-affected districts (Dolakha, Dhading, Gorkha, Kavre, Makwanpur, Nuwakot, Ramechhap, Rasuwa, Sindhuli and Sindhupalchowk). These positions will be based in Regional Office in Nepalgunj, Dolakha and Kavre. 

H4L is a five-year (2012-2017) project financed by USAID. The H4L project builds on accomplishments gained from USAID/Nepal’s health sector investment to date with a greater focus on health systems strengthening and measuring sustainable changes in systems performance. The primary goal of H4L is to strengthen the Government of Nepal’s capacity to plan, manage and deliver high-quality and equitable family planning, maternal, newborn, and child health services. H4L addresses key health system constraints: local health systems governance; data for decision making and evidence-based policy development; capacity development of service providers at grassroots; quality improvement systems, and knowledge and behavior change. Gender equality and social inclusion is an important crosscutting focus of the project. H4L works in partnership with the Government of Nepal/ Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) and have national presence. In addition to national focus, it works in 12 Districts of the Mid-Western and 2 Districts of Western Development Regions. 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Driving RTI vehicle as assigned by the Office Manager or designated officials
  • Responsible for transport of authorized clients, visitors, goods, messages, mail, etc.
  • Collect and deliver goods, mail, documents, and other items
  • Meet official personnel at the airport and facilitate immigration and customs formalities as required and provide safe and secure transport to the required destination 
  • Collect supply requests from project sites and liaise with the Team Logistics Officer/Assistant and district logistics teams to monitor progress distribution of requested supplies to field warehouses and stores
  • Take care of the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned means of transport, check oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc; perform minor repairs and arrange for other repairs and ensure that the vehicle is kept clean.
  • Log official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing, etc
  • Read and understand specific vehicle/vessel operating manual to ensure the safe and appropriate operations of the vehicle.
  • Ensuring regular follow up of the hired project vehicles in the filed
  • Follow-up materials sent to the field and give a feedback on the status closely working with both region/district storekeepers and warehouse persons.
  • Obey traffic rules and Road Signs, Negotiate, liaise and coordinate with local authorities to facilitate smooth running of vehicle/vessel movements.
  • Ensure that the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident, in such cased report to the designated H4L/RTI officials as soon as possible 
  • Supports team coordinator in administering other office drivers.
  • Produce weekly records of mileage traveled and tonnage moved.
  • Identify any apparent problems during field deliveries and report them to the appropriate personnel.

Required Qualifications:

Training and Experience

  • Vocational training; formal drivers training with a valid driver's license in good standing
  • At least three (3) years of work experience as a driver; safe driving record with a recognized institution.
  • Additional experience in basic logistics support preferred 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repairs. 
  • Knowledge of radio, email, telephone and other applications.
  • Trustworthy, high sense of responsibility, alertness; physical fitness on duty, emotional stability, neat and courteous.
  • Proficient in both written and spoken English and Nepali, proficiency in local language and dialect will be added advantage 
  • A basic knowledge of Microsoft Office (preferred) 
  • Ability to work hands-on, independently, and within team.
  • Culturally astute, respectful and tolerant
  • Knowledge of operating office equipment, printers, photocopiers, scanners preferred.
  • Physically and mentally healthy to perform the duties required (basic health check up will required – scanning of serious communicable disease, eye sights, etc.)
  • Good knowledge of the area and the current conditions of roads and highways.
  • Ability to deal patiently and tactfully with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge and experience working in Nepal and project activity areas preferred.
