For

Assessment of Fiscal, Economic Loss, and Socioeconomic Impacts of Heatwaves in Lumbini Province

BACKGROUND

Practical Action is an international development organisation with a vision of a world that works better for everyone. Working together with communities and our global partners, we’re developing innovative real-world solutions to build sustainable lives and livelihoods for people living on the frontlines of poverty and climate change. We're turning surviving into thriving and overcoming injustice, especially for women and vulnerable groups in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Our work brings together a range of thematic expertise to create integrated programmes that address multiple dimensions of livelihood improvement, climate resilience, and equality. Our programmes support communities to improve livelihoods by adapting to the impacts of climate change and preparing for climate-related shocks.

The Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance (ZCRA), formerly the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, is a multi-sectoral partnership powered by the Z Zurich Foundation involving nine diverse organizations from the humanitarian, research, and private sectors. Working across 15 countries, the Alliance utilizes evidence-based research and community-centered programming to enhance resilience to climate hazards in both urban and rural settings. Their mission aims for systemic change by promoting good practices, influencing policy environments, and increasing funding to ensure communities can pursue development and growth while effectively managing climate risks.

In Nepal, Practical Action and Mercy Corps, the Alliance partners, continue to collaborate to achieve our shared program goals. Practical Action spearheads the knowledge documentation forming base to influencing actions. In Nepal, Practical Action is implementing the ZCRA programming via the project- ‘Climate Resilience Program’ (CRP) with focus on two major climate hazards- flood and heatwaves. We focus on those most vulnerable and most in need and enable them to cope, adapt and thrive. We bring our evidence from grounded programs to scale to achieve systemic change. We focus on the provinces of Sudurpaschim, and Lumbini and the selected Palikas from both provinces, as well as engaging with the Government of Nepal at federal level.

We aim to:

  • Build ex-ante resilience of communities at risk of flood and heat impacts (prevent risk through enhanced adaptive capacity) by working together with decision makers at all levels.
  • Improve early warning and early action in advance of probable hazards risk (reduce the probability and volume of losses through anticipatory action)
  • Enable people who experience livelihoods losses due to floods and heat to recover quickly through compensation and/or insurance (avoid long-term erosion of resilience)
