Youth Innovation Lab (YI-Lab) is a not-for-profit civic tech company that works at the intersection of emerging cutting-edge technological tools and their applications by equipping young professionals to solve emerging challenges in our community. About the project

SUCHAK-AI applies artificial intelligence to strengthen the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology's (DHM) core service delivery functions for forecasting, impact assessment, and public risk communication without displacing DHM's institutional authority over verification and dissemination. Following the engagement between DHM, People in Need (PIN), British Embassy Kathmandu (BEK), and Youth Innovation Lab (YIL) on 27 July 2026, this two- pager sets out the project in full: what it will deliver, how, and by when.

The project is framed under the RAIN Programme, with funding drawn from EDIT. YIL delivers as a technical partner to PIN, working alongside BEK-embedded staff within DHM, and in continued coordination with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) to ensure consistency with national multi-hazard early warning systems.

Across all four strands, delivery follows a government-embedded, human-in-the-loop model: AI tools handle monitoring, synthesis, visualization, and drafting, while DHM staff retain final judgement over verification and public dissemination. This design safeguards institutional accountability, reduces the risk of automated error reaching end users, and ensures DHM remains the trusted, authoritative source of hydrometeorological information throughout.

We are looking for the following positions: 

1. System Architect

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Assess business, functional, and technical requirements and translate them into system architecture and technical specifications.
• Design the overall system structure, including applications, databases, infrastructure, interfaces, and integration with external platforms.
• Evaluate and recommend suitable technologies, frameworks, tools, and deployment approaches based on performance, cost, and maintenance requirements.
• Define APIs, data models, communication protocols, and integration standards to ensure compatibility across system components.
• Establish architecture principles, development standards, and technical guidelines.
• Design authentication, authorization, data protection, and secure communication mechanisms.
• Plan for scalability, availability, performance, backup, and disaster recovery.
• Collaborate with project managers, developers, designers, quality assurance teams, and other stakeholders to guide implementation.
• Review technical designs and critical code changes to ensure alignment with the approved architecture.
• Identify technical risks, resolve complex system issues, and recommend improvements to existing systems.
• Oversee integration, performance, security, and reliability testing against agreed requirements.
• Prepare and maintain architecture diagrams, technical documentation, deployment guidelines, and handover materials.
• Support technical knowledge transfer and mentor development teams.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• At least five years of relevant experience in software or systems engineering, including system design or technical leadership.
• Demonstrated experience designing and implementing complex software systems and integrating multiple applications.
• Strong understanding of software architecture patterns, APIs, databases, networking, and cloud or on-premises infrastructure.
• Familiarity with containerization, CI/CD, version control, and system monitoring.
• Knowledge of application security, access management, data protection, and recovery practices.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
• Ability to explain technical decisions clearly and coordinate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

2. AI Developer

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
• Minimum 3 years of experience in AI application or software development
• Strong knowledge of Large Language Models, Vision, Speech and multimodal AI
• Experience with AI agents, memory, RAG, embeddings, vector databases and MCP tools
• Advanced skill in Python and relevant AI libraries and frameworks
• Experience with FastAPI, Django or similar backend frameworks
• PostgreSQL, Redis and API integration knowledge

3. Backend Developer

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).

• Strong experience with Python, Django, Django REST Framework, FastAPI and similar backend technologies
• Experience designing REST APIs, system integrations and scalable backend architecture

4. Frontend Developer

Required Qualifications

5. Hardware Engineer 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Research, evaluate, and support procurement of hardware required for projects, including AI workstations, sensors, controllers, edge devices, communication equipment, and supporting accessories.
• Coordinate with vendors for hardware selection, procurement, installation, commissioning, warranty, and maintenance.
• Plan and support installation of high-performance AI workstations, including GPU-based systems, ensuring suitable power supply, UPS/backup, cooling, ventilation, networking, and room conditions.
• Work closely with DevOps, MLOps, AI/ML, and software teams to ensure hardware infrastructure meets deployment, training, inference, storage, networking, and monitoring requirements.
• Design, assemble, configure, and maintain AI Station hardware, including sensors, controllers, communication modules, edge devices, and supporting circuits.
• Maintain and integrate existing sensor, IoT, and edge computing infrastructure as required throughout the project duration.
• Develop and maintain embedded firmware for data collection, processing, device control, monitoring, and communication.
• Configure connectivity through Wi-Fi, GSM/4G/5G, Ethernet, or other suitable technologies.
• Integrate AI Stations and edge devices with dashboards and software platforms through APIs and protocols such as HTTP/HTTPS and MQTT.
• Collaborate with AI teams to deploy and test AI models on compatible edge devices and hardware accelerators.
• Support monitoring of live sensor readings, device health, connectivity, alerts, hardware status, and remote configuration.
• Design and test power systems, battery backup, enclosures, cooling arrangements, and installation setups suitable for field conditions.
• Conduct hardware testing, sensor calibration, troubleshooting, performance assessment, and preventive maintenance.
• Support secure device authentication, firmware updates, recovery mechanisms, and hardware-related security requirements.
• Install and commission hardware at project locations, provide maintenance support, and resolve field issues in coordination with vendors and technical teams.
• Maintain hardware specifications, circuit diagrams, bills of materials, firmware documentation, asset records, installation guides, and test records.
• Continuously research suitable hardware, sensors, edge devices, AI accelerators, networking equipment, and other technologies required for current and future projects.
• Train project staff and users on equipment operation, monitoring, basic troubleshooting, and maintenance.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Practical experience in embedded systems, IoT devices, computer hardware, electronics, or similar projects. 
• Proficiency in C/C++ and familiarity with Python.
• Experience with ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi, or comparable embedded and edge computing platforms.
• Good understanding of computer hardware, including CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, power supply, cooling, and networking components. 
• Knowledge of sensor interfaces, PCB design, soldering, hardware debugging, and communication standards such as UART, I2C, SPI, RS-485, or Modbus.
• Familiarity with APIs, IoT communication protocols, networking, and dashboard integration.
• Basic understanding of Linux, GPU computing, edge AI, or TinyML will be an advantage.
• Understanding of power requirements, UPS systems, cooling, ventilation, and safe installation of high-performance computing equipment.
• Ability to work closely with vendors, DevOps, MLOps, AI/ML, software, and project teams.
• Strong problem-solving, documentation, research, and teamwork skills, with willingness to travel for installation and maintenance.

6. QA Engineer

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a experience on related field.
• At least 2–3 years of experience in software quality assurance or software testing.
• Good understanding of software development and testing life cycles.
• Experience in manual testing of web and mobile applications.
• Knowledge of functional, regression, integration, usability, and performance testing.
• Familiarity with API testing tools such as Postman or Swagger.
• Basic knowledge of SQL and database validation.
• Familiarity with automation tools such as Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium, or similar tools is preferred.
• Understanding of Agile or Scrum-based software development.

7. DevOps/MLOps Expert

Key Responsibilities

• Assess existing infrastructure, deployment workflows, and operational requirements, and recommend improvements.
• Configure and maintain cloud or on-premises environments, including servers, networking, storage, and access controls.
• Develop and maintain continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for applications and services.
