Position Title: Research Associate
Location: Kathmandu, Nepal
Employment Type: Full-time (Monday – Friday, 9am to 5pm (On-site))
Key Responsibilities:
1. Proposal Development (Lead Role)
- The Research Associate will take full lead on developing high-quality proposals, including:
- Developing research frameworks and conceptual approaches suited to the assignment
- Formulating key research and evaluation questions
- Designing appropriate methodologies (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods)
- Preparing detailed timelines and workplans
- Writing and editing proposal narrative, ensuring clarity, coherence, and technical rigor
- Coordinating inputs from team members to produce a complete and polished proposal
2. Report Writing and Secondary Review
The Research Associate will support the production of research and evaluation reports, and will conduct secondary review of existing literature and documents, including:
- Drafting report sections with clear structure, concise language, and well-supported findings
- Conducting secondary review of relevant literature, project documents, and programme data to inform research design and findings
- Synthesising evidence from multiple sources, including secondary sources, into coherent narratives
- Developing recommendations and lessons learned grounded in data and analysis
- Ensuring reports meet high standards of written English, with clear, accessible language throughout
3. Data Analysis and Synthesis
The Research Associate will support data analysis activities, including:
- Analysing quantitative and qualitative data collected during research and evaluation assignments
- Synthesising findings across data sources, geographies, and time periods
- Presenting data clearly and accurately in written reports and visual formats
- Use of SPSS or STATA for quantitative analysis is an advantage
Skills/Requirements:
- Education: Master's degree in a relevant field such as development studies, social sciences, public policy, public health, statistics, economics, or a related discipline
- Language: Nepali and English (spoken and written)
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of research methodologies, including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods approaches
- Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely for different audiences in English
- Working knowledge of logical frameworks and theories of change as used in evaluation design
- Demonstrated ability to develop high-quality research and evaluation proposals
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to interpret complex information and produce clear, evidence-based conclusions
- Strong spoken communication skills in Nepali and English
- Strong team player with the ability to collaborate effectively across roles and functions
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines under pressure
Preferred Skills
- Experience using SPSS or STATA for quantitative data analysis
- Familiarity with OECD-DAC evaluation criteria
- Prior experience in international development research or evaluation consulting
- Experience: 1-3 years in a similar setting (research companies)
