Position: Research Associate / Junior Engineer — One
Project: Climate Change and Adolescent Mental Health in Schools
Donor: Wellcome Trust

Position Overview:
IHRR is a conducting a research based project on how reducing extreme heat exposure in secondary school environments impacts adolescent depression and anxiety in Nepal and Sri Lanka. IHRR leads Work Package 2 (Intervention Co-design for Sustainability) and leads all engineering coordination in Nepal including numerical modelling of school environments, installation of environmental monitoring instrumentation, design of heat-mitigation physical interventions, and capacity building of local engineers (WP5).
The Research Associate / Engineer will provide direct technical and research support to the IHRR project team, assisting with engineering assessments, environmental monitoring, data collection, equipment management, and coordination with international partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Engineering and Technical Activities:
- Procurement, installation, and calibration of environmental monitoring equipment in project schools (weather stations, hygrometers, anemometers, air quality sensors, data loggers)
- School typology assessments and baseline environmental characterization
- Support numerical modelling of school environments
- Assist in design and installation of heat-mitigation interventions
- Regular field visits for monitoring, maintenance, and data collection from instrumented schools
Research and Data Management:
- Collect, manage, and submit environmental monitoring data (temperature, humidity, air quality, daylighting)
- Support co-design workshop activities and documentation
- Prepare technical reports, quarterly progress narratives, field logs, and photographic documentation
- Contribute to conference contributions and scientific publications as required
Coordination and Administration:
- Liaise with school authorities, local education officials, and disaster management professionals
- Support Social Welfare Council (SWC) compliance documentation
- Attend quarterly LEAP meetings, annual project meetings, and international partner coordination calls
- Support procurement, vendor management, and equipment records per IHRR financial procedures
- Contribute to capacity-building training for local engineers and technical officers (WP5)
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field
- Minimum 1–2 years of relevant professional experience in engineering, environmental research, or field-based data collection
- Strong written and spoken Nepali; working proficiency in English for international reporting
- Willingness to travel to project schools across Nepal including Terai/southern regions
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel) and ability to manage data systematically
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with environmental monitoring equipment (sensors, dataloggers, weather stations)
- Familiarity with building energy simulation or numerical modelling software
- Experience on donor-funded research or development projects
- Knowledge of Nepal school infrastructure and education sector
- Experience in report writing for international donors or research institutions
- Understanding of climate change adaptation, DRR, or public health research

Position Overview:
The Program Assistant will support the implementation of IHRR's programs focusing on Disaster Preparedness, Risk Reduction, and Community Resilience. The role includes field support, data collection, community engagement, stakeholder coordination, and logistical assistance to the program team. The position requires a motivated individual who is committed to working with vulnerable and marginalized communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support program team in planning, implementing, and monitoring project activities in the field
- Assist in community mobilization, awareness raising, and capacity-building activities
- Collect, compile, and manage project data using digital tools (Kobo Toolbox, ODK, etc.)
- Coordinate with local governments, CBOs, and community stakeholders
- Support the documentation of field activities, success stories, and progress reports

Required Qualifications:

Position Overview:
The Geospatial Research Associate at IHRR will play a pivotal role in conducting geospatial analysis, hazard mapping, and applied research to advance the organization's disaster risk reduction (DRR) mission in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region and beyond. The role requires proficiency in GIS, remote sensing, and emerging geospatial technologies, and involves working within a multidisciplinary team of GIS specialists, hydrologists, engineers, and researchers. The incumbent will be responsible for integrating geospatial datasets into evidence-based solutions for resilient communities.
Key Responsibilities:
Geospatial Data Analysis & Hazard Mapping:
- Utilize GIS, remote sensing, and 3D modelling tools to analyse terrain, geological structures, and natural hazards; produce high-resolution hazard and risk maps integrating heterogeneous datasets.
- Process and interpret satellite imagery, LiDAR data, and aerial photography for multi-hazard risk assessment and land-use planning.
Research & Development:
- Maintain a geospatial database of project sites across Nepal and the HKH region; conduct research on emerging geospatial methods and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
- Analyse high-resolution and open-access datasets for disaster risk assessments; stay updated on scientific advancements in geology, GIS, and DRR.
- Explore and manage DRR technologies including open data platforms, drone/UAV applications, and virtual reality tools for preparedness initiatives.
Capacity Building & Training:
- Design and deliver training programmes on GIS, Google Earth Engine, programming, and risk mapping for stakeholders; mentor junior team members and facilitate knowledge-sharing workshops.
Reporting & Documentation:
- Prepare field visit summaries, data assessment documents, and analysis reports; support project leaders in drafting proposals, progress updates, and final project reports.
Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Collaborate with national and international organizations, Government bodies, and community groups; represent IHRR in meetings, conferences, and workshops.
Leadership & Teamwork:
- Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment; provide technical guidance and organize brainstorming and co-creation sessions.
- Submit detailed monthly timesheets specifying tasks and hours worked (segregated into morning and afternoon sessions) as per organizational requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Geomatics Engineering, Geography, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and remote sensing platforms
- Experience with satellite imagery analysis, LiDAR data processing, and hazard/risk mapping
