MERCY CORPSOVERVIEW

Mercy Corps is a leading global organization powered by the belief that a better world is possible. In a disaster, in hardship, in more than 40 countries around the world, we partner to put bold solutions into action — helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within. Now, and for the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic, the most significant global challenge faced since World War II. Apart from the unprecedented onslaught on the global health system, COVID-19 has pushed the world into an economic crisis. The virus has taken its toll on public health, but it is evolving to be economically contagious. Alongside the economic impact, the social impact of the current pandemic and lockdown is concerning were vulnerable groups, including women, children, youth, persons with disabilities, those with compounded care burdens, socially excluded groups, indigenous peoples, refugees, internally displaced persons, and migrants, have limited or no coping strategies to manage shocks. There are concerns that the most vulnerable people will be increasingly forced to adopt negative coping strategies in response to the new risks and economic challenges, often compounding existing vulnerabilities.

Project

Mercy Corps Nepal is planning to conduct a multi-sectoral needs assessment for COVID impacts linked to both migration and monsoons which will result in assessing remaining unmet or newly identified needs. The assessment will be conducted to include multiple sectors aligning Mercy Corps COVID-19 Response Strategy on Program and Policy Analysis, Cash Transfers, Social Protection and Resilient Households (WASH and Behavior Change Communication, Resilient Markets,) Social Cohesion and Public Trust. The need assessment will also seek updated information on the quarantine centers, influx of returnees from India and abroad. Additionally, this assignment will also assess the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 on the severely affected sectors of the economy, including the associated informal economy and the capacity of the affected population to meet its early recovery needs in the working areas of Mercy Corps Nepal. The emphasis is on the poor and on groups made vulnerable by the crisis. This assignment will also understand the impact of the crisis on different groups (men, women, boys and girls, and other vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and marginalized communities) and to understand their coping strategies.
